Hi, I have owned a R4i 3ds revolution for DS flashcart to use in my ds lite for about 4 years now. Has every DS game, plus emulators and every game for many many many mutiple older consoles, and I love it a lot. I recently aquire a 3ds xl and while I am going down the rabbit hole of using a sky3ds card for 3ds roms, I would LOVE to use a flashcart to run all the above mentioned roms on my 3ds with its larger screen and R L buttons that dont require regular maintainance. The card I have now is not reconized at all in my 3ds, I assume it's either incompatible or needs some kind of change in the firmware. Either way, I want to leave that card alone, as it works 100% as is in my ds. However, I'd love to find a similar cart which I can essentially install whatever firmware it needs, and copy everything from my current sd card onto a second card , and use it on my 3ds A) is that possible? And B) what flashcart should I purchase? The r4i has treated me extremely well, and would love to stay w that brand

The name "R4" has been used by countless clones. There is not a single brand you could stay with. Mostly recommend here is the R4i Gold 3DS Plus. You can buy it here [mod3dscard] and [nds-card] It's compatible with almost all DS games, has no "timebomb" in the official kernel and if you ever change your mind and decide to mod your 3DS console, you can do this easily with this flashcart because it has an internal switch for ntrboot (you have to open the cart for this). (Therefore the magnet).

If you already eliminated contact issues as a cause for your existing R4i not showing up, there is a chance it is blacklisted by the 3DS firmware. You could search for an update of your old flashcart. If any update exists that works on 3DS firmware 7.0.0-13, it will work on any version. (Nintendo stopped blocking DS flashcarts with that version)

Ironically installing cfw would disable the checks and your older cartridge with "3DS" already in its name would most likely work as it is.

You should not copy "everything" from the old SD to a second. Copying the old cart's kernel/software is unnecessary. Only copy ROMs, homebrew and saves (hopefully the same format).

DS-lite shoulder buttons usually don't require maintenance. If they are worn down, you will have to micro solder. Ughh! Tiny points:

I will state this again:
If you want DS homebrews, buy an Acekard 2(i). You can install NTRBoot and the cart is still usable. Also nearly every homebrew supports AK2i because it is the standard.
If you only need to run commercial ROMs, buy a DSTwo (Plus). It has functional real-time saving, and let you edit RAM to "debug" the game freely.

Do frogminer (it's free) and you'll likely have support for that blocked flashcard when running luma CFW.

But you know that the DSTWO isn't available any more? And that the ak2i is discontinued as well? And that the r4i gold 3ds plus more or less replaced the ak2i?

You should know where to buy...search them on Taobao, Xianyu or AliExpress. They are made in China after all.

The DSTWO is sold out everywhere for a few years now. Of course you can have luck and stumble across a used one, but new ones are impossible to find.

I went with the r4i gold plus, shold let me copy everything on my current card onto another and put it in the new flashcart

I think that you don't need to buy a flashcart. You can use your R4 with Luma cfw. I have an old ACE 3DS Plus and it works really well on my n3ds xl. Anyway, I prefer to play DS games on my DSi xl they look better.

I don't want to use custom firmware

I still think the DSi XL screen is better for DS games by a mile. Not only is everything smaller on the 3DS, but there’s something about the clarity.

Even in pixel perfect mode, 3DS pixels have a faint border that DSi XL screens don’t.

At least where I am (Tokyo) DSi XLs in great condition can be had for like 20 bucks. It’s the way to go for DS games.

totally your choice but may i ask why not? you are already pirating games and circumventing the ap measures in place . . . why not go all the way down the rabbit hole?
I'm just not looking to play IT tech on my console and do all that work with my fairly limited free time. I want to drag and drop files on a card and just have it work, like my existing ds card, my sky3dsplus, and my many everdrive
