so if the smash brothers release requires 6.0+ (and I'm currently on 5.x) would it be better to:

update the firmware using choidujour to something currently supported by cfw

or

use tinfoil to install the game and ignore firmware requirements?

Both are fine options really, tinfoil is a little less work i guess.

Future games are eventually going to require 6.X, with or without tinfoil's ignore option, so you might as well update to 6.1.0.

Do not update to 6.2.0.

Tinfoil will not let a 6.2 game play on a lower firmware. Tinfoil does not magically create master keys

ok thanks - but will smash require 6.2? From what I've heard its just 6.0+ that's the requirement?

Also, just hoping for sx os support for 6.2 to make this easier for all of us.

smash is not out yet so no one knows. the game went gold way before 6.2 came out
but Nintendo might release a day one update that requires 6.2

Yes...but game updates don't magically encrypt the game a new way so so it won't boot with a fw lower than what the update needs. therefore tinfoil's bypass fw requirements will work. in other words, it won't change the key that it requires. the game releases in 2 weeks; its already either already in the hands of retailers or shipping to them now. its not going to magically not work unless you update to 6.2.0. relax. at most it'll need 6.0 but a game that was just released, pokemon lets go eevee/pikachu works on 5.1.0 at the minimum with tinfoil's bypass fw requirements. i bet smash will work on the same fw at the min at the lowest if not 6.0.

a lot of people will appreciate it if you stop talking out of your ass because some people want accurate information.

I think there will be a day one patch that will make the game require 6.2 but I don't think it will ship requiring it. Will be interesting to see though. Yesterday Warframe worked on 6.1 but now it requires 6.2

like i said i'm sure smash will be perfectly playable on lower fw versions, even with the latest update. think about it. if game updates re encrypt a game so it cannot run on a lower fw, don't you think every single switch game would be unplayable on lower fw than the latest? nintendo obviously wants you to be on the latest fw version so if this was possible, they would issue updates for all of their games that re encrypt the game with the latest version the moment the fw update is out.

there are updates that require the latest fw version, but in all of these cases, they just artificially require it by putting an xml file in there telling the game not to run without the latest fw update. what tinfoil does is tell the game to ignore that xml file. simple as that, now the only way i can think of that smash will be unplayable on a fw lower than 6.2.0 is that if they completed 6.2.0 before the game went gold and just didn't release that fw update until now, which i kind of doubt.

Future games are eventually going to require 6.X, with or without tinfoil's ignore option, so you might as well update to 6.1.0.

Do not update to 6.2.0.

this will happen of course but probably not for a while. even new games like pokemon lets go can be played on old fw versions. on of my switches runs 5.1.0 and one is running 6.0. both run pokemon lets go just fine.

i'm getting kind of annoyed by all this misinformation. stop spreading it, it doesn't help things at all. if you don't know what you're talking about, either say you're not sure or don't comment at all.

buy sx then do a emunand with 5.xx or <6.1 and you will be okay playing originals on 6.2 and emunand for pirate games.

Smash will be playable on 6.1. There’s already early copies out there reported on reddit. Future dlc, updates or revision of the game may require higher FW.
