Okay, so today I picked up a PS3 slim, an older unit, model as above. It was on 4.81, and according to stuff I was able to read on PS3Xploit, I need to be on 4.82. I want to get to where I have it on CFW so i can install multiman and the like.

It already had a PSN id on it, but obviously can't log in because 4.83 went live. Anyways, as it is right now, it's not really letting me do the act and idps dumper or anything. Just seems to fail, over and over.

I just want to be able to be on CFW again, because a PS3 on OFW is about as useful as a PS4 on OFW... which is to say, not useful at all to me otherwise.

I already copied the support tools from ps3xploit to the root of the USB drive I gave it, but like, nothing is successfully happening when going through the site, it keeps acting like it's making progress, but then ends with an error and to refresh and try again.

What am I doing wrong? I'm sorry if this is a newbie thing to say, but I've not had a working PS3 in more than a year, and the last time I had to mess with this stuff was around the time of the PS3Jailbreak USB dongle with my phat model, and being angry that all the cool flash backup/restore stuff was only being made for neutered models. Five dead BC models later, I'm quite fed up with the Sony build quality. I just want something that works as fully as possible that I don't have to basically expect to die the moment I choose to look at it funny. Since I couldn't find any written tutorials how to do it, I was trying to use the YouTube video that more or less implied all I had to do was coppy the HAN_support tools contents to the root of the USB drive, and then load the website. But even with making a point to clear cache/cookies, etc. and the like, It just keeps saying "Exploit failed".

You didn't say, but have you upgraded to 4.82?
Yes, I did. When I turned it on, it was still at 4.81.

In any case, I had to come back to it the next morning. Even then, it took several tries, and apparently some extra files like that .hex file before things started to work, and I was then able to flash into CFW, and finally, into Rebug 4.82.2.

That said, like I mentioned before, I've been "out of the game" for the PS3 hacking for a while. Like the last time I had to put any serious effort into it, it was when it was still mandatory to stay under 3.15, then 3.55 to get anywhere CFW wise. I know I'll never be able to just pop in a burned ps1/2/3 game and have it naturally work like my launch ps3 on cobra-enabled CFW was able to, but wondering what else I can do with it.

You can definitely set it up to play burned ps1 or ps3 games. I don't know if the ps2 software emulator will play off discs, but the compatibility is lower. I have a ps2, so I've never really bothered with it.

I mostly use my ps3 for running movian, streaming video from a DLNA server.

I switched from psjb for games, to using iso with ps3netsrv. That way you don't have to copy the games to the internal hard drive.

This make sound stupid but make sure the usb is plugged into the correct slot. It's supposed to be plugged into the second port closest to the dvd drive

Opps read you got it to work in the end lol

Yeah... back with my chipped PS2, I mostly had to burn games to disc because I definitely never had enough storage to even think to keep ISO's stored anywhere. That and the reason I was motivated to look into chipping/modding said consoles was explicitly because Sony consoles had a knack for eating and destroying genuine game discs. :nayps3:

I also miss how with the CECHA and CECHB PS3's, PS2 games did modestly load faster, but more importantly did look markedly cleaner on the same tv, even when connected on Component Video cables. The difference was more pronounced on HDMI. I guess I'll probably want to pick up some of those "no-PSN" pkg files for stuff.:yayps3:

hay man, np hope you got the ps3 working
I have a slim 2004A unit,

im a bit confused on something tho:

um, if your on fw 4.82 (rebug 4.81),
and you made a full system backup using the utility,
when you replace Old HDD -> New HDD,
when you reinstall the FW, you can just use the same FW you had when you made the system backup?
like if I'm on rebug 4.81, after I replace HDD I just reinstall the rebug 4.81.PUP?
