Heya all. I'm in the market to replace my aging first-run R4 to use on my O3DS. Can anyone recommend a basic, functional DS flashcard (and a reputable place to buy it) that would get the job done? I don't need any enhanced features like co-processors or anything like that (I have a GBA flashcart), just something to boot .nds files. Wood compatibility is a plus, of course.

anything is compatible as long as you have your console hacked, if thats the case, get a good old ttds, if not, then get a R4i gold 3DS RTS plus

I know some of the older cards have pin contact issues in 3DS consoles, like my R4. That's part of why I'm looking for feedback.

With no flashcart, you can play (most) nds roms with TWiLight Menu++.

Thanks for the link. I use TWilight currently, but I've been needing to replace my actual flashcard for awhile since my GBA cart (in my Lite) requires one to load/write GBA roms. Figured I'd kill two birbs with one stone by getting something modern to use in both systems. I'm not a fan of GBA VC on the 3DS.

What's the difference between the one you linked and this one, by the way? (besides NTRboot) https://www.nds-card.com/ProShow.asp?ProID=146

nothing they both run wood the real difference is the quoted card has a switch to change it from ntrboot to ds mode and vice versa

Appreciated. I'll probably pick up the cheaper variant then, since I have alternative solutions for (re)installing b9s.

understood although if you dont have a ntrboot ds flashcard i would recommend buying one although b9s can be used to unbrick a system it was previously installed on with a ntrboot ds flashcard you can fix 3ds consoles you happen across even in the event that b9s is not previously installed on the system

I'm reconsidering the more expensive solution after @TurdPooCharger noted that the other one has a timebomb. I mean, $6 extra isn't a huge deal anyways, and as you said, having a recovery cart is a good idea. I spent nearly $80 on my R4 kit back when it was new lol

If I may be honest i'm against flash cards but if you really are after one i personally favor the Supercard dstwo since it can play snes, gba and video files, although i'm unsure if you can buy them anymore but they are a very good card. not sure if there's a model that allows 3ds games but having gba, snes and video files makes it a very impressive piece of kit.

Those features are largely moot these days with the advent of 3DS homebrew, but I remember that card being top dog way back when.

agreed

as far as 3ds use yes it is snes gba and video files can all be played on 3ds/2ds with cfw (and with more accuracy) so the special features of that card are "moot" (redundant) when it comes to 3ds/2ds. gba vc, snes vc (and snes emulator injects in the case of o3ds/o2ds), and even the ability to play 3d movies horribly overshadow scds2's features . . . now if you (also) own any original ds family systems ds/dsi/dslite/dsixl then scds2 is obviously the best decision

Moot means it doesn't matter, inconsequential.

I would recommend one of 3 things.

  1. Get the R4i GOLD RTS <---awesome cart. Commonly available, SDHC compatible. NTR boot capable.
  2. DSTT It's SDHC compatable and it has a side loading (mSD slot on the side) variant that I like alot. Plus it's about $7
  3. Use your R4, No SDHC but R4 works great on 3DS with this: https://gbatemp.net/threads/r4-stage2-twl-flashcart-launcher-and-perhaps-other-cards-soon.416434/
I don't think the DS TWO is worth the price IMHO. Their exclusive features are outdated. IF you want a performance boost, you could possibly trade in your 3DS for a NEW 3DS and get the DSTT for something close to what you would pay for a DSTWO. Much bigger upgrade IMHO. Besides, you can get devices that run android SNES for less than the price difference.

My R4 doesn't register with my 3DS due to pin contact issues. Spent a week or so trying. Used the cardboard trick and everything. And I know my 3DS is to blame because commercial DS games only register half the time.

Sell the system. Trade it for a New 3DS and pay the difference. The processor upgrade and "Super-Stable 3d" is awesome. Then you can use your R4. Besides, it probably won't matter which cart you use if your cartridge slot doesn't work...

I won't suggest that cart not only due to the timebomb in the kernel, but also because you are paying more for the same cart that the same team sells for cheaper.
I also suggest the R4i Gold plus because it doesn't have a timebomb (due to officially running Wood R4,) but also has a physical switch for NTRboot and that saves time if you ever need to hack another 3DS.

Have you tried cleaning the contacts and or using some compressed air to blow out any dust? I know these as very basic questions, but it's best to start with basic troubleshooting before going any deeper.

Yep. I cleaned the pins the last time I had my console apart and I use compressed air in all my card slots (3DS and otherwise) regularly. I've had issues with this XL's card slot for quite awhile now and even legitimate 3DS cartridges don't register without a piece of paper slid between it and the card slot. On top of that, this R4 is aaaaancient and barely registers in my DS Lite these days. I figure it's just time to replace it. Maybe I'll leave it permanently docked in my Lite as a companion to my EZflash V.

I can't see 3D, or I would have long since upgraded. The CPU upgrade doesn't really offer me much unless they find a means to un-stall PCSX Rearmed's progress (unlikely due to the nature of the 3DS hardware). I might see how low New 2DS consoles go during Black Friday and see if it's worth the hassle.
