So I got my Switch a couple of months ago. It was on some 3.x firmware so I decided to let it stay that way, not upgrading and then stopped using it due to lack of time mixed to fear of upgrading and losing any possible "new" exploit.

Now I will have some more free time and mostly I want to finally USE it :)

I still want to preserve as much as possible the original firmware (i.e. no fuse burning and the minimum modifications possible to original filesystem etc.) "just in case". If I understand correctly what I read in the past months, I can "hack" my switch and then upgrade without burning fuses with "ChoiDujourNX" homebrew, then use AutoRCM to avoid any unwanted reboot to original bootloader. Is that right or did I forget something important?

I would also like to try some games before buying them, so running so-called "backups" would be required for me.

So, for now I am completely clueless on what the best course of actions would be. I definitely need to backup everything that I can, so the first question is: what is the current best way to achieve a full (and fully usabble) NAND backup with the less modifying needed on the system?

And after that, is that just a matter of "installing" a custom firmware (I think ReiNX is the current only free one available and with all the functions I'd need), right?

I could also decide to spend some money on the paid CFW (SX), I am not sure if it is the only one with EmuNAND capabilities at the moment, or if that is needed at all. What I would like, obviously, is to be able to choose between running my backups, I think offline is the only way to go, and using a "clean" system with original games and maybe online content/services from N.

Now, this is where I understand that I... did not understand almost anything... I tried studying and reading many past threads, but I am still scared of damaging my console and of being banned by N.

I wish there was an up-to-date noob-proof guide, but it looks like I am not able to find such. So, here I am asking for help: please help me from the beginning, hopefully this is the right place to ask that :)

There is a difference between adding support for a firmware and only having support for a firmware; ReiNX V1.7 falls under the former.
im trying to do the last step by using this command [sudo python3 ./fusee-launcher.py ./ReiNX.bin] on terminal on Mac but im getting a error?

If you're going to hack your Switch, regardless of whatever actions you take, you should backup the NAND as well as boot0/boot1 using Hekate. Not only will it be clean and hack-free but this will ensure that no matter what you do from that point onwards, you will be able to recover from pretty much any brick. A link to a tutorial can be found here (this also contains instructions on how to use CFW but you don't have to use it as I'll be linking more appropriate guides below).

After you do that, you can use ChoiDujourNX (which is a homebrew app) to update your firmware without burning fuses. The best firmware for CFW is currently 5.1 but if you want to play online, you must update to 6.0. In order to do so, you will need a CFW to load the homebrew application. There are currently 3 main CFWs available to users namely ReiNX, Atmosphere, and SX OS. The first 2 are free while the the third requires payment in order to enjoy all of its features, features that are available in the free CFW (apart from raw .XCI loading but the free CFW support .NSP loading which is objectively superior, think of .CIA from the 3DS).
ReiNX: https://reinx.guide/
Atmosphere: https://www.sdsetup.com/
SX OS: https://sx.xecuter.com/
Once you pick your CFW and update your firmware with ChoiDujourNX, then you're all set to load hacks/CFW/homebrew offline for as long as you want. When you are ready to go back online, you are going to need to restore the clean NAND you made which instructions on how to do that can be found in the first guide I linked you to. Then once you're done playing online and wish to return back to offline hacking, you will need to make another clean NAND backup. The reasoning for this is because the original clean NAND backup you made will have changed from Nintendo's perspective so if you restore it a second time, Nintendo will notice you modified your console. So you must repeat backing up and restoring clean NANDs everytime you go online then offline again.

The EmuNAND designed by TX is not a 'true EmuNAND' because it emulates the NAND from the NAND and not from an external location such as the SD card. What this means is that you run the risk of the EmuNAND partition being detected by Nintendo so I wouldn't risk using this to keep me safe. However if you want to give it a shot, there are no guides/tutorials on its proper usage so usage is highly discouraged as a result.

Ok, I have a very simple question. I am in 4.10 fw. I would like to use my switch as if it were a retail one (e-shop, online with legitimately bought games, etc) and also have access to homebrew.

Is there a safe way to do that? Or is using any kind of homebrew incompatible with online play and eshop purchases (in the sense ban is almost guaranteed)

You risk a ban by doing so if you don't separate them. You can either take that risk or stay offline with all of your hacking and restore a clean hack-free NAND prior to going online to minimize the chances of a ban. To obtain a clean hack-free NAND, simply make a NAND backup before hacking the console. It should also be noted that restoring this NAND will wipe whatever CFW/homebrew/hacks you installed so those will need to be reinstalled once you are done playing online. Furthermore, you will need to make additional NAND backups once you return offline with your hacks since if you restore the same NAND backup twice, Nintendo will notice you modified the NAND.

This is a stupid question but, how do you keep track of what dlcs you have installed without the eshop's help?

When installing NSP updates on your Switch, if for example I have an NSP on my NAND do I install the update to the NAND as well or to the SD card? I am trying to install a games update to allow me to run it, but it seems to be giving me an error every time, thus forcing me to RCM, boot up, and delete the game itself.

It doesn't matter where you install it but it goes without saying that if its installed to the SD card, the update will only be applied when the SD card is inserted. However, I am unsure about the problem you are describing. Perhaps you are accidentally installing the update by itself or the .NSP itself is corrupt?

Okay just checking, the game says 'Cancel' or 'Update' it doesnt give me an option to just play, and when I update the NSP, it gives me an error and forces me to re-RCM and boot

Either you are not installing the appropriate update or its corrupted. You can use the NSP verify feature in Tinfoil 0.2.1 to see if the update is good or bad. The latest build available from the GitHub page should have that function.

okay awesome I will check that out. I believe my version of Tinfoil is outdated too

So i have a "clean" NAND backup from before i got my SX Pro, thing is its on 5.1. Im on 5.1 right now but im probably gonna update for a couple games (Mario Party, i suppose it would require 6.0) so would that clean backup would be useless once i update? What would be a good "safety measure" to do before updating?

I was thinking on restoring my old NAND now that im on 5.1, updating so the new 6.0 NAND is "clean" but all my saves would be lost, right?

So, how should i proceed?

First, Super Mario Party doesn't require 6.0 since it was available for preload for a month now and 6.0 recently came out. Second, the NAND backup will eventually be useless but you can just make another clean NAND on firmware 6.0 by restoring that NAND and then updating it to 6.0. The problem is the cleanest way to update it would risk burning fuses. If you don't mind burning a fuse, you can just update it normally online. However if you want to update it without tainting your NAND but don't want to burn a fuse, you will have to boot into RCM when the console is rebooting after downloading and installing the firmware.

As for your saves, you can either save those using homebrew such as Checkpoint or make another NAND backup containing those save files. If you are going to go for the latter option, I recommend making that backup with the ReiNX toolkit as it backs up the NAND much faster than Hekate. Hekate is more useful for making clean NAND backups. Oh and regardless if you burn a fuse or not when you update your clean NAND to 6.0, you should make a backup of it in Hekate if you plan to continue using it.

Oh, Super Mario Party does not require 6.0? Thats great then, i can hold on for couple more weeks now.

So if im not mistaken, i CANT do that if im already on 6.0, right? So i have to update my old NAND NOW that im on 5.1. I cant update to 6.0, restore my old NAND with 5.1 and then update that one to 6.0? Im asking cause i dont want to restore my old NAND, update, bakcup again, restore my saves, etc etc. Kinda lazy, but if thats the only way, no problem.

Im asking all of this cause i have read all this post about 6.0/SX 2.0 being broken, with lots of crashes and from what i understand, crashes are bad and crashes gets people banned, so i would like to have a clean 6.0 NAND in case i get crashes and want to restore that NAND, just to be sure.

So just to be clear, the best method to do all of this is to restore my old NAND now that im on 5.1, backup my saves, update to 6.0, backup that "clean" NAND and restore in case of any problem?

If you're already on 6.0 and didn't restore your clean NAND already, then the NAND that you're running right now is the tainted one full of hacks that can flag you for a ban. If you don't mind taking the risk for an absolute 100% clean NAND, then you don't have to restore it. But if you do, then you have no other choice unfortunately.

I mean for all of the problems I'm hearing about 2.0, it seems like V1.9 seems to alleviate them as long as you aren't interested in EmuNAND since that's the only reason I would see someone running V2.0 right now.
So just to be clear, the best method to do all of this is to restore my old NAND now that im on 5.1, backup my saves, update to 6.0, backup that "clean" NAND and restore in case of any problem?
Yes

Hi all, I'm looking for the best way to setup my Switch. I have two Switches, one to play online with, and one to mod. The problem is that my main Switch (The one I will use online) is currently on 6.0 and has all my save data. Is it possible to get into my Switch, backup the NAND, dump my saves, and then restore the NAND? Will that allow me to still use it online safely?

Otherwise, I plan on keeping my other system in airplane mode and exclusively using it offline. I have a 1.0 system to use as my spare. Should I update it at all? If not, what's the best way to run games on it?

Thanks for any and all help.

If you're going to backup the NAND, then you can just restore that NAND before you go online and dump the saves via homebrew. That is because a clean hack-free NAND is pretty much the best way to avoid a ban.

As for your 1.0, the best firmware for CFW is currently 5.1. However it would be a waste to update it normally so I recommend using the homebrew app ChoiDujourNX to update without burning fuses so you can return to firmware 1.0 in the future.

So just making sure on a few things:

1) NAND backup/restore has a limited amount of uses, correct? Basically since you're rewriting the entire NAND, this isn't the healthiest for the system... This is why I'm planning on just using two Switches. So my process for my main sytem (The one to keep clean) would be RCM -> Backup NAND -> Install Homebrew -> Backup Saves -> Restore NAND. This method should leave my main system clean and intact, correct?

2) As for the second system, I would then do RCM -> Backup NAND -> Install Homebrew -> Use ChoiDujourNX -> Restore Saves. Then is I ever want to restore NAND, I can restore to my clean 1.0 FW, correct?

Thank you for the help, I just want to make absolutely sure what I'm doing is correct. Thank you so much!
