But it is broke. I cannot update my official games, or connect online even if I do want to pay for it. I just don't see a reason not to update. With TomGers SD files supporting 6.0 and atmosphere with 6.0 support on the way, i'm thinking about waiting a week or two to see if anything really is broken, then update.
As soon as you have started hacking, you will not be able to do any of that anyway unless you want to risk getting banned (and then not being able to do anything of that anymore). Also, any update increases the amount of telemetry sent and thus the risk of being banned. The advantages of not updating (officially = with burning fuses) are: It is not possible to downgrade. If any exploit is found on a firmware lower than your fuse count, you cannot use it, thus you should not burn fuses in the first place. Currently, there is no exploit known for 5.1.0, but that may change, and then it might not exist in 6.0.0. If an exploit is found in 6.0.0 (but not in 5.1.0), users of 5.1.0 have no problem: They can update to 6.0.0 and use the exploit there, but if an exploit is found for 5.1.0, but not in 6.0.0, users of 6.0.0 can not downgrade to 5.1.0 if they have updated officially.
This is why we need emunand so we can have an emunand that never goes online for homebrew and the main nand could be left to officiall games and online. Also, would someone please answer the op as to how well homebrew itself works on 6.0 . Not piracy or any of that, just homebrew for running emulators as he states.
Well, yeah, that would be one application for an Emunand. But I don't think that that will become mainstream as you would need to remember to always switch sd cards when you boot ofw or emunand as if you boot up with the emunand sd in OFW, you might get banned.
Considering how fast these exploits are being released to the public (us), I would guess a 5.1.0 exploit would be released at the end-of-life of the Switch. So I wouldn't worry too much about it. If fusée-gelée works, and keeps working, that's all that matters for people on high firmwares.
The exploits are released when they are patched. If they are patched faster, they get released earlier. Thus, you can assume that whenever an exploit is released, you cannot use it on the current firmware, so it is a wise choice to stay low. Just recently a bug (I wouldn't call it exploit) was released which was patched in 6.0 (but can't be used for anything), so it's not that nothing is released, but that the switch has strong security. While the deja vu exploit is useless in the current firmware, other exploits might pop up which make it usable again.
On the principle, you're perfectly right. But in real life, we probably will not see an exploit for 5.1.0 for years to come, if ever. FG is not perfect, true, but it's working nicely, right at this moment. You can get a dongle from aliexpress and you're good to go anywhere you want to game on the Switch. For most people, that's good enough.
why? if you can have all this homebrew stuff on the sd that you only use offline yet leave disabled when online then why would an emunand be different? it seems highly unlikely they would seek out emunand files to ban people and even if they did it would likely also get set off by nand backups
Well, they really want to stop hackers, so I think they will try it. If they can reliably detect emunand without false positives, I am quite sure that they will ban people for that. I also think that they would ban for NAND backups, because why not? Of course we can't be certain, but if I was nintendo, I would do it.
considering the fact that your online ranking for spla2oon is stored on your local save and not there servers like logic would bring any other reasonable online game dev to do I don't think they're bright enough to do that
Game developers are not system developers. The game developers (except Gamefreak, because it wants to force people to participate in the pokemon giveaway events) might not care too much about hackability, but Nintendo itself does very much.
you do relise the game was developed by nintendo and usually company stances usually apply to the whole company. also, theres the fact that they disabled cloud saves to try to stop cheating by savescuming. which when they mentioned save scuming as an issue that could also allow reverting to an old online ranking they admited publically that online rankings are stored localy on each switch which is disappointing
