Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Mini delayed to 2019

IMG_1504.JPG

Earlier this year, we saw SEGA announce the Mega Drive/Genesis Mini console, which would feature retro games built in. Originally, this was set to only launch in Japan, but due to demand, SEGA is delaying the mini throwback system in order to be able to release it worldwide. A re-design of the current hardware is also being looked into, with some extra staff being hired on to the project. The new release window has been pushed back to 2019, but now there will be a simultaneous launch in Japan, Europe, and North America.

Here we go console wars of the 90s all over again, 'cept mini version... SNES Mini vs PS1 Mini vs Genesis/Megadrive Mini.

Even if I own two modded PS1s, I'm happy to see this, especially if when it gets hacked and we can play more games on it than the few 20 handpicked ones.

Damn, why are they all copying Nintendo lol
Well to be correct Sega did mini megadrive way before Nintendo so again nice to see Nintendo fans claim everyone copies off them.

The only difference here is Sega are making it and placing it in a Sega megadrive shell.

Whereas before away let other companies make them.

I don't see the sense in the mini versions unless they allow you to play original games or use it as a key to download the rom.

Uhm. Okay, the only way I really can make sense out of it is if they produced much more consoles then needed for the Japanese market and now they want to repackage some of the JP units for NA and Europe, because I can't see why they can't delay the release for NA/Europe while releasing the console on the JP market first. or do they fear people will buy all the consoles from the JP market and shiping it to NA/Europe and leaving the home market without enough units? It's such a strange reason. Do they believe a hype in JP could swap over all the way to NA/Europe and they fear they can't get this hype to work anymore in NA/Europe if there is to much time in-between?

Can someone with a marketing background make sense out of this for me?

Rumor is ATGames is still working on it.. So, SEGA isn't making it..

SEGA has hired on "new staff" to work on the hardware design, as well as some software engineers, though. Seems like ATgames screwed something up and SEGA is pushing it back to fix it, honestly.
Or trying to hide it. Let's be real, SEGA has made an entirely half assed effort these past 16 or so years. If it is entirely first party? Great. If not? No surprise.

Sega was making this type of console waaaaaay before Nintendo.
Get your facts right kid.

It’s better to say it was Nintendo who copied Sega.
Or you could educate him in a mature manner on why his statement was correct, instead of being a dick about it, as well as using the term "kid" as a degrading insult.

wasn't this desinged and manufactured by ATGames anyways? They already produce tons of (crappy quality) licensed mini Sega consoles anyways. What was so special about this one?
it's sexy design, other than that I'm pretty new sure not much has changed... Who knows? Maybe we can finally get a high quality MD mini this time.

Would like to have M2 just put sega games on Switch like they have been doing on 3DS the past years. I mean yeah they announced the Sega Ages cart for it but something like the nintendo classics on switch would also be nice to have added as part of the sub package.

@Chary was there any more announcements for the sega ages on switch yet? It's been months.

Spoke to Tom Fulp the other day, if he can find his old Newgrounds site content like the mini Flash animations from the 2000's that played on the portal.

So far no response, but he did say that he'll find them. Wayback Machine doesn't have em.

@SylverReZ, atleast the 1999 versión of pico's school is avaliable (the difference between it, the 2006 versión and the 2016 versión is that the speed of the game depends of the speed of your computer and that it had the og soundtrack)

@Xdqwerty, Another being Pico VS Bear, the original 1999 version before Jim Henson filed a DMCA takedown.

  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@SylverReZ, although the "secrets" system where the game was has been removed. Also pico vs uberkids had a netplay versión that was shutdown, although the swf file has been found
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, Nope. There are two download buttons on the same page, where you can download the original under a file called "bear.exe". "bear2.exe", however, is the updated game in a Flash projector. P.s. this was on the archived Pico page from 2000.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
