.NSP files are installed with fake tickets; they don't need a linked Nintendo Account. What they do need is a CFW that supports fake tickets which currently all CFWs do. However .NSP titles that require firmware 6.0 may not work so well as other .NSP content.

But the game would normally crash instead of asking him for a linked account on CFW without sigpatches (at least from what I experience on my Switch).

Correct, however those are hard to come by nowadays. Most, if not all CFW, are currently packaged with "sigpatches" so unless he downloaded an outdated CFW, he may be launching his .NSP games in OFW.

OFW also results in a game crash (from my experience again).
unless he installed a game with a real ticket somehow.

Yes, this is normal behavior since using an online leaderboard requires online functionality and online functionality is granted with a Nintendo Account. NSP files are only given a fake ticket to launch them not play online.

Wouldn't be much of a portable device if they did that
if you have installed a game with NSP, it is supposed u have done it online with an Nintendo Account. That does not impact the portability.

This won't help you, but I can play any game no matter what account I use. Linked or dummy.

Try Next Up Hero, it won't work (and it has an offline mode).

If it requires internet to open the game, it would ruin Switch portability actually...

Imagine going on bus and using it or using it in the woods, beach or wherever you go on a trip without internet connection and not being able to open offline games because of a stupid leaderboards or some crap like that lol

That would make Switch to work only near coffees, restaurants... or if you have 3G and have to keep sharing it with Switch...

I wanted to try Fallout Shelter as well, but the game tries to force me to create a Nintendo account before launching the game. There's certainly a flag in the exefs that could be modified to get around this, just seems very dumb not to allow an entirely offline experience with some games. Though, how else would one obtain Fallout Shelter without attaching a Nintendo account and downloading it from the eShop? :P

Strange. I never signed in with my NNID and my NSPs work fine.
(BTW, if you install devmenu - go to r/switchroms - there should be an option to bypass the need for having an account to use software).

That and it is a F2P game. It's similar with No More Heroes, the game is designed for multiplayer, that's how you get levels.

and, as a regular customer, how would you obtain that game if not using the eshop that requires internet? It just brokes your downloaded nsp, and not the customer who uses the nintendo's eshop.

Yep I agree! "Nice" that you found another game that requires that

Depends on the game, only a few requires that. Anyway I'll try the devmenu and see if in that way it works, it would be nice! I know that some nsp has troubles with devmenu but anyway having a workaround would be nice!

You don't need to install the nsp with devmenu (though I did), but what I'm talking about is that devmenu has an option to bypass the need for an account (It's a system setting BTW. Nothing to do with installing nsps)

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
