So I'm a little confused with this Lakka and retroarch thing.

Lakka, as far as I know can emulate anything basically up to Wii using retroarch on there, but Retroarch as regular homebrew can only do up to PSX.

Why is this? Does Lakka use the hardware of the Switch differently or something?

Lakka runs through Linux and RetroArch (RetroNX) runs through Horizon (the default OS of the switch). We don't have GPU drivers for homebrew in Horizon, so RetroNX runs "worse" in terms of speed. This should change with GPU drivers and maybe it will run better than Lakka (because you don't have Linux running in the background).

How is Lakka booted? I'm guessing not from the Homebrew menu?

In your opinion, how long do you think it would take to develop these drivers?
Devs that gave up: 2

Thank you. Two quick questions:

1) If the vast majority of my emulation interests are in 16-bit era games, would you say that RetroNX is sufficient in terms of performance? Or would Lakka provide a benefit?

2) I may ( at some point) want to play some PSOne era games...so same question as above.

Thanks again!

That's a huge time frame. Could be a few months could be 5 years. It's all got to do with dedication and if a team of people would be needed to create the graphics drivers.

I wouldn't recommend Lakka at all, because it can only play sound through a bluetooth headset. But RetroNX is sufficient for 16-bit games. PS1 is also working, but not so great, haven't tested Lakka.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I only know that there was some progress being made in the last months.

can you please elaborate? Did they gave up the developement completely, or only the OpenGL port? The GPU emulation in yuzu and ryujinx is getting better and better, so the knowledge must be there, but I guess interfacing the drivers has it's unique difficulties
