Set your 3ds' primary DNS server to: 159.203.242.044

This will prevent you from downloading the automatic update
, so you should stop getting prompts asking you to update.

There's a lot of speculation about what 11.8 does, but what's important right now that everybody stays on 11.7 until we can figure out how to move forwards.

You don't need their app to use their DNS.

You can also follow this guide:

You said it - 3DS does not have automatic updates, and your partner/brother/cousin/dog "accidentally" updating (which requires clicking two things, one of which on-screen) doesn't make it automatic :)

But, fear not! Even if you come across an 11.8 console, you can always restore/ctrtransfer it back to 11.7!

Or just to be safer, do a SysNAND backup while on 11.7, since you never know:P Also, no need to change DNS servers unless you really hate the update nag (I don't really mind), but just heads up that unless the DNS is the default value, a few games may have issues while online, plus you can't use things like proxy for some stuff (eg: MH4U CQs).

To clarify, the 3ds appears to download the update data in the background, regardless of whether SpotPass is enabled or not.
You'll repeatedly be bothered with random pop-ups that say "System update is ready to install"
And I don't know about you, but I've found myself in the position where I'm pressing A to launch an app or a folder or something, and the window will pop up, and I'll end up hitting A to start updating even though it wasn't what I intended. I've found that if you turn it off fast enough, you can skip updating, but it's better to be preventative.

Good to know though, and as people have said if you're on 11.8 it's not the end of the world, but you need to be careful that you don't get yourself banned.

It downloads the files and are stored within pending titles within FBI. You can then delete those so they stop giving you that update nag.

Banned of what? Online play? eShop access? Both?

If I get banned of eShop access will I still be able to access to FreeShop?

freeshop will still be accessable. Currently, I dont think anyone really knows of what type of ban ninty would, or will ban people with for this newest update.

Accessable and... usable ?

The information right now it's confusing. We don't even know if Nintendo did break Luma on purpose or it was just accidental as they changed so many things that Luma just doesn't work now.

I do believe it should be usable. Luma also did get a fairly quick hotfix to getting 11.8 to work.

The thing is though, if this tweet https://twitter.com/SciresM/status/1024327784892530689?s=20 is to be believed, is that the situation might be more complicated than just Luma compatibility.
If Nintendo is retroactively implementing new banning strategies that's a reason not to update at all.
I'm sure it'll all shake out in a few days. I'm personally not going to install the hotfix and I'm just going to stay on 11.7 until the situation is better understood.

If you havent updated yet. I do believe that staying on 11.7 is best until they find out all of whats going on with 11.8. Luma breaking was one big thing. But there may be other bigger things going on with that firmware.

Nah, after you accept the first popup (by pressing A or an on-screen button) you must accept another (which is only on-screen, and in a slightly different position too)
