Wait, if you get banned you can't update anymore?
System or games? Or both?
Don't worry, this is not likely to happen to you if you don't abuse your leftover CDN access after getting banned. Basically, a normal ban consists of the console being unable to connect with dauth which is the server that handles the eShop and online play. There is another server by the name of atum which is typically used for game and system updates. The problem is using a CDN downloader you can actually access the eShop through atum allowing you to pirate after a ban. This new ban cuts off access with atum meaning you lose access to all content from the CDN with your Switch.

EDIT: @V-Temp I understand you were answering her question, but I would prefer you also add in the pertinent facts so it doesn't appear as fear mongering. These superbans are going to be realistically applied to a small subset of people.

Shhhhhiii...
I hope someone find a fix for that, unless just for updates.

There's nothing to fix, you're auth token is completely revoked for the cert. Don't abuse CDN privs and you won't get a full token revocation.

Thanks, I never managed to make cdn gui works, and NX shop looks very dangerous so i didn't use it too, i am still trying to load devmenu using xci image of south Park, but my switch always freeze.

With the kind of mega ban people are discussing, both. See Draxzelex's post.

We really don't know if that's true going forward. Ninty could always become more aggressive.

Granted there is a slight chance Nintendo might decide to upgrade all bans to remove access to both dauth and atum if they wanted to, but until they do, its safe to assume you will be able to use game and system updates with a normal ban.

What about the people who used NX shop to download several games then stopped using it? Same mega ban, right?

Certainly possible, which is why I think it best to consider usage of any CDN tools as at best foolish given what has transpired.

I'm unaware of an instance in which Nintendo upgraded one ban to another type of ban for no reason. You're right that we don't know though.

Indeed because that tool functions like a CDN downloader but on your console. Right now, there is at most 3 confirmed cases of the superban but 2 of them are questionable because it appears there was some maintenance going on when they checked for a system update. However, the superban is real as evidenced by the cert that was used with CDNSP.

Just so Im clear. They are banning CDN access. So like.... Im using CDNSP on my PC, download games. They ban my switch for that? How is that even possible. Or is there a way to use CDN stuff on the switch itself and THATS what their banning? Clarification please. Sorry if this looks stupid, but Im genuinely confused as to how theyre doing it.

I believe its several public certs that were nuked and no longer work (who knows exactly how many but one of the threads on here tried several and none of them worked now), just that only one actually belonged to someone.

CDNSP or any other tool of its ilk requires a certificate. CDNSP provided cover certificates (unless you put in your own) that have started getting banned and then the tool no longer works. If you used your own cert, then it doesn't matter if you did it on your console or on your PC, you have to pass the cert to get access to the servers, and so they know what you did.

FreeShopNX used your own certificate which a lot of people didn't realize until today.

To access the CDN, you need a console's unique certificate. So whatever you download from them, they know it was you who specifically downloaded those titles. And bans are applied to the console certificate since this is normally used for eShop access and online play.

EDIT: Ninjas are annoying :P

Nintendo has the right to protect their content. I sore as hell would. I would send a message to the end user stating why they are banned every-time they tried to update or connect to a nintendo online service. I wonder if second hand consoles sold at gamestop can be unbanned by nintendo. Since gamestop can prove they were not the original owner, nintendo might have a deal with them and unban switches so they can be resold. Second hand switches are going to be come landmines. you wont know if its banned or not. I dont think gamestop is gonna go through 10 checks to see if a console is banned when its traded in.

It is not a new concept for gamestop -- this sort of thing has been going down since the original xbox, and definitely the 360 (so 2009 or so).

Nintendo definitely can unban you (I imagine they just have the banned users on a big list/table in a database, or a flag next to the user name). I doubt they will do it for gamestop, or at least I we have never seen such a thing happen in the past (and given most pre release warez copies come from such shops you know there would be a line in unbanning people if it was as simple as getting a job in gamestop or befriending someone that works there, or maybe in a regional refurb location).

Whether gamestop will check there and then or not I have no idea -- I don't know where the 10 checks thing comes in and instead they will likely have either a means to test via serial or a quick means to add an account and jump online -- you might trade a game in 30 seconds but an online console is a different matter. Alternatively they might either price it in accordingly or have you sign something to say it is not banned.

Second hand from the general public will likely be a minefield if you care about bans, no great difference there though.

I'd like to say that from what I've read, I agree wholeheartedly with @V-Temp.

I don't think certificates will be something people will be jumping to make public, given the number of hackable switches is fixed (and won't be getting larger soon), and N holds all the cards.
