Yes they do make the system slow. I'm using a 128 gb card in my o3DS XL, and it takes about 15 seconds for everything to load.

Plus, you have that built in limit of 300 games on the home menu, so why bother?

When you format your card, choose cluster size 64KB for more speed. Be warned that if you intend to use TWLoader, it doesn't play nice with that though.

Sorry, newb here. I am confused because the N3DS and 2DSXL only support up to 32 GB sd Card. Are you using the internal SD slot or some type of flash cart?

you can use higher capacity cards, just format it as fat32 and choose cluster size 64KB. right now, im using 128 gb micro sd card on my 3ds.

Only choose 64 KB cluster size if your SD card is at minimum 128 GB. If you do 64 KB cluster on a 64 GB or smaller card, you will run into compatibility issues with GBA Virtual Consoles, etc.

Even then, you may have to resort to 32 KB cluster on a 128 GB card because 64 KB still might not work correctly.

So does that mean you can even go beyond 128gb? Up to 256?
Thanks!

Why stop there if you want to go for pure overkill? If money's no problem, largest micro SD cards are 512 GB at this moment for around $350 cheapest. You can horde the entire 3DS library per a region and still have some space left over. Between late Q4 2018 to TBA 2019, we'll be seeing 1 TB (terabyte) SD cards.

The 64 KB cluster helps somewhat in HOME Menu loading and game stuttering for these massive capacity cards, but the general trend still holds that bigger comes at the cost of slower.

if you have emunand installed, the process is a bit different than just copy and pasting into the new sd card, google backup-restore-of-emunand-when-upgrading-replacing-sd-card, it will take you to an awesome madconsole thread. it has a step by step on how to do it. but in your case, if you have luma3ds, you should be fine just copy and pasting
