Microsoft purchases GitHub

IMG_8264.PNG

After supposed claims that Microsoft was looking into acquiring GitHub, it has now been officially confirmed. In a few months, Microsoft will own GitHub, a major purveyor of open source code. With the prior success of other acquisitions like Minecraft and LinkedIn, GitHub staff claims they feel confident with Microsoft's leadership.

According to the announcement blog post by the site, innovations will be made with Microsoft's help, though the focus on providing open software will always remain. A new CEO, Nat Friedman, has been appointed as well, while the previous CEO and co-founder of GitHub will be now working directly at Microsoft.

Of course, this announcement and the rumors leading up to it has caused controversy. Microsoft hasn't always handled its acquisitions well, with many pointing to Skype as evidence of this. GitLab, a competitor to GitHub, has also seen massive registration numbers in the past two days.

The total transaction cost Microsoft 7.5 billion dollars.

i still fail to see the reason behind all the doom & gloom calling, i have yet to find a company that microsoft singlehandedly killed
True, but did it Wunderlist, Nokia, Rare, Hotmail, LinkedIn, Lionhead, Minecraft or Skype any favour to be bought by MS?

Rest in Git, you will be missed.

One has to wonder: Was it worth it for Micro$oft?
Hoho ho windows more like "win$hit" am i rite my dudes?

Yes, cause MSFT would invest 7.5 billion in Github to destroy it. They've done nothing but improve Linkedin since they've acquired it.
MSFT have one of the (if not the) largest open source project on github, vscode.

Basically most peoples argument boils down to "hur dur capitalism is bad".

mojang literally had no effect from them,
nokia did go under but they are definitely recovering,
never heard of wunderlist,
didn't know anything happened with hotmail, i thought they were always a microsoft service
wasn't linkedin doomed from the start?
skype was trash to begin with in complete retrospective
EDIT: fable was lionhead's downfall, i don't think it was microsoft's fault

Well, I mean, why is it bad? Just because Microsoft supposedly ruined the other stuff that they bought?
Github is a major service used by lots of developers, I highly doubt that it will die easily.

Git is an open standard and Microsoft will likely add proprietary elements to it, making it incompatible to the already existing, working and needed alternatives. So they can introduce yet another monopoly, this time on a very serious matter that the whole world depends on, software version control. It's their declared goal. Combine with them saying stuff like "Linux is cancer", and things really could get ugly. Maybe this Reddit ELI5 will help you understand.

And yet again, Microsoft can eat a bag of dicks, may their draconian acquisition BS tactics forever fail.

unlike EA

What about all the emulators on GitHub? Surely, they can find a way to eff it up.
