Super Nintendo game Return of Double Dragon to release this July

IMG_8172.jpg

It's 2018, but even now, the legacy of the Super Nintendo lives on. A once Japan-exclusive game--Return of Double Dragon--will be finally making its way west, 26 years after it originally released for the Super Famicom. Technically, English-speaking audiences did see a release of this game, in the form of Super Double Dragon, but it was drastically different from the Japanese version, lacking extra attacks and bonuses stages, as well as AI changes. The game will launch on July 19, offering local co-op and an official English translation. It'll cost $49.99 for the cartridge, which will work on original Super Nintendo hardware.

$49.99? Is that really necessary? Should at least come with a ROM for that price.

This is so much better than the Mega Man X and Mega Man 2 official anniversary re-releases, which went for a ridiculous 100 USD each. This game's not too expensive IMO, since it's probably around the average price you would pay for a game repro.

IDK where you're buying reproductions from, but most of the ones I've picked up were closer to $20. Used originals for $20 to $40, except for a few which are $200+.

Interesting... I read HG101's write-up about the game, but they never mentioned anything about extra attacks or bonus stages. They nerfed the knife throw damage and had an extra corridor in the final stage (for no apparent reason), but that was it.

-that said I have the original US version, and I would be interested if they actually added anything

When SNES games came out new, they were $60-$90.

And that was in 90's prices which are closer now to $100-$140.

So yeah, getting the games for essentially half off isn't bad at all.

That's rather poor logic. They created these games, not found in a warehouse and only 20 were made and only 2 are left. You're paying full price for a game that would go for a few bucks at a retro shop. Their "original" price doesn't matter.

Its almost the same game as Super Double dragon. I play both. Here's some differences..
The music for the truck stage in super double dragon is played on the last stage in return of dd.
There is extra areas in stage 7. You can pick up different weapons if already holding a weapon. The fire bomb is no longer a 1 hit kill. The knife damage is reduced. The enemies now crouch (which is annoying). There is different enemy placement then Super double dragon. There is a difficulty select screen. The guys with the swords die faster. Stage one music is different. The ending has different text.

Basically The Japan version of Super double dragon has more features. It must a been released in USA first.

Nothing stopping you from making your own legal backup.
"Repros" (since that's basically what all the new releases for old consoles are) aren't cheap to make, since they're made in small volumes and Nintendo is no longer making boards, cases etc for them so the boards and cases have to either be taken from existing carts and repurposed or reproduced entirely. For that reason repro carts likely cost more to manufacture than 3DS and Switch games.
