ketosis? Body uses fat as its energy source instead of carbs? Never done it so dont know much about it. If you want to lose weight just work out your TDEE and eat a few hundred hundred cals under it and run 3 times a week.

Been doing keto for about a month now. The first week sucked really bad as you will start to feel like trash (low carbs) but afterwards you feel fine. I have been doing keto with intermittent fasting (eating 2 times a day within a 4 hour window) and feel fine. I don't feel tried or hungry. I have lost about 6 lbs.

Very good advice. Although some people have a hard time counting calories. So the keto diet can make eating less easier - because it automatically gets rid of some of the most calorie dense foods.

Running is good for the health, but by no means necessary. You can easily lose weight with no exercise whatsoever. KIKO (kcalories in/kcalories out) if your calories in are less than those you spend - you will lose weight no matter what.

Its nice to see someone understand how simple it really is, i know you don't have to run but its a really fast way to burn cals and you are sure to be in a deficit if you cant count your macros/cals and helps getting those 3500 cals a week burnt off.

It's only dangerous if it's caused by underlying pathology.

See in diabetics glucose is present, but it cannot be taken into the cells, leading to a state of gluconeogenesis which makes the problem worse.

In self-induced ketoacidosis this underlying pathology is absent, and thus there is really not much harm from changing the body's underlying pH slightly. You can pee off and breathe off acid pretty easily.

You really shouldn't do this if you're diabetic. Hell, noone should follow this diet period!
I kinda forced myself into this diet loosely because I didn’t want to develop insulin dependency after being diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic. The massive reduction in carbohydrates and sugars keeps my glucose levels low. If I splurge on pizza or pasta, I hit 200+ on the tester for awhile. Usually I’ll water fast for 18-24 hours to bring it back down. No insulin though. A snickers bar or glass of juice only has it up for a few hours.

The Keto diet works. When your body enters ketosis, it’s exhausted it’s supply of carbohydrates and sugars for cellular metabolism so it starts breaking down fats for energy production.

It can be dangerous though if you don’t take care of yourself properly. You’ll hear horror stories filled with fear inducing conditions happening, but they’ll fail to mention things like the person only drinks diet sodas and no water. Or they work out 5 hours a day and do 72 hour dry fasts.

It really is just common sense. Consult your physician and see if they feel it could be beneficial.

Be careful dude. I'm glad you replied to the diabetic part. It sounds like you might need to go on insulin though. (I really don't want that happening to you)

I’d be more worried if I started going numb in my extremities or was prone to infections. As of now it’s pretty well controlled with metformin and diet. I was going to the gym every other day for awhile til I found out I got a busted heart valve. Glucose levels are still low though so I’m ok.

For type II diabetes, usually insulin doesn't help. This is because the disease is caused by poor glucose receptors on somatic cells.

People with type II often have normal insulin levels, but the overload of glucose in the blood stream means the receptors are over stimulated and no longer work.

This leads to the cells starving due to lack of incoming glucose, and peripheral damage due to glycation of tissue by the hyperglycemic blood.

idk I have recently lost a stone and a bit over the past 2 months just by doing occasional exercise and not giving into too many cravings for snacks while out, been pretty easy tbh but then I know some people who try really hard (or at least claim to, idk if they secretly snack) and really struggle, I guess its just a matter of finding what works for you and having the conviction to stick to it

but I have also seen many people do strict diets, loose a large amount then pile it back on randomly once they feel they have hit a happy weight, I think its best to not rely on strict/crash diets as its really just starving yourself and training your body to think food is scarce, and if/when your mind frame slips and you binge hard it holds it all like nobodies business

The keto diet essentially forces you to eat more healthy food. Often the really calorie dense foods are carbs like bread, noodles etc.

Look if you eat a bunch of meat, fruit and fats you are eating a healthy diet.

So essentially this is just an easy way to have a healthy diet. And exercise is good for you, but dieting is by far the best way to lose weight. It's very hard to lose weight with exercise because the human body is very efficient, and doesn't burn many calories from a lot of exercises.

----------------------------------------------

Why do you think this diet damages the body? Look there's a lot of science to back keto up. It is not a crash diet.
To be fair, i just went of the assumption most fad diets have unhealthy aspects to guarantee quicker weight loss. I apologize for calling it a crash diet :P

Like with most diets that restrict one thing, the end-goal is to reduce calories, sometimes to an unhealthy degree. That's why Atkins works. Carbs tend to be really calorie dense, so cutting them out of the equation helps you reduce daily calories. Plus, cutting them out also makes you lose a LOT of water weight, which makes it look far more effective than it is. For keto, it's not that it doesn't work, what's important is understanding why it works. Oddly restricting what you eat because you can't count calories or watch what you eat is a bit weird. There are also odd side-effects for not having a full diet (similar to atkins) that are linked to above.

It's potentially damaging if the calorie reduction is too much, or if essential parts of a diet are cut out. Rather than focusing on smaller portions, it tends to focus on larger portions of lower calorie foods and working that angle. I'm not sold on the idea weight loss is because the body is being forced to use fat for energy. In the end, it's probably just whatever gets your calorie count down...but it's not a magic pill. It's just a structure to accommodate those who can't manage to eat smaller portions.

This article talks about some potential negatives, but it's not research, so i'm not confident in their assertions: https://www.womenshealthmag.com/weight-loss/a19982439/ketogenic-diet/

Agreed. It's all about reducing calories. Keto works because it gets people off of carbs.

I think if you can calorie count, that's the best way to lose weight. But most people can't be bothered to do that. So you get these diets. Fortunately you don't actually need to ingest sugar, your body can make sugar out of protein. So keto doesn't cut anything essential out.

Also if the body enters starving mode, it won't go for fat first. It will go for muscles since they are easier to digest than fat. That's why it's important that you actually exercise rather than starve yourself.

No one should follow diets, full stop. They should just exercise more and eat healthier, that's all it takes. It's no special mumbojumbo. The more energy you get in, the more energy you get to lose if you wanna lose the weight. If you wanna stay the same follow the same you do.

Keto has proven itself scientifically to be beneficial though.

Also starvation mode isn't a real thing and I hate when people parrot that.

I've been on a sub-20 carb diet for about a year. Have lost close to 40 lbs. Also started exercising daily. Never felt healthier or younger. As long as you continue to eat healthy foods (vegetables, meat, low quantity of nuts) your health can vastly improve.

Also of note there is a new netflix documentary (the magic pill) that claims cancer needs glucose to spread. Thus a low carb diet may inhibit cancer cell growth.

If it was the golden magical diet, everyone would be doing it no?
Some years ago it was LCHF, before that it was Atkins. There is no working diet in the longrun. Plain and simple.

Starvation response is very real and documented. It's just more complex than simple "starving".

My gf is a huge fan of this diet, she's trying to lose some weight till summer. Recently she also started attending beauty spa clinic to have cool sculpting sessions. And I must say she looks so gorgeous now.
Normally I don't go much in for the unsolicited advice bit but here I will; maybe don't phrase it as such if you are going to tell her that.
