Do you need to already have the USB cable in before you try to boot into RCM mode ?

I've tried with a safety pin a few times and it seems like it works (No splash screen) however as soon as I plug the switch in it boots up normally.
No you don't need cable to get into RCM. If you get no-screen its fine thats mean you're in RCM.

Thanks managed to get it working. Couldn't get either a safety pin or some wire from a cheap pair of headphones to work so thought I'd try combining them :)

Wow, first, hardmod, then, bentpins, afterward, 3d printed jigs, and now, a mere safety pin.
Just 10th? Aren't you supposed to touch 1th as the same time?
1/2/7/9 are all ground I think, so pin 10 and any of those.

The entire rail is grounded. I've been using merely an unbent paper clip. I have it in an L shape, one end makes contact with pin 10, the other end I touch to a screw on the rail. Works well for me probably 80% of the time. I've even seen someone use just a staple from pin 10 to the rail.

When I first started I just wrapped the joycon's connector with a little bit of aluminum foil and shoved it in. This bridges all the pins, which is really not safe to do but it worked lol.

chances are the pin is touching part of the rail that has the paint scratched off, thus grounding it. possibly wherever the pointy end of the pin is. pointy things have a tendency to scratch/pierce through the insulating paint layer
You don't need to ground it to the rail. You are the ground . (Unless you're wearing rubber gloves or something )

The correct name is "diaper pin" here in Brazil is called "Alfinete de Fraldas".
That's the tip.

So i don't need to touch both pin 1 and 10? Just touching the 10 will do the trick?

I have not tried it yet, I just helped the translation.
just use this pin and push the tip of the pin into the metal part of the switch chassis to generate a GND and make it work as RCM.
In theory it should work yes.

@xstationbr in France it's named Baby-sitter/nurse pin but the true name is "Epingle de securite" (safety pin)
So I guess diapers pin is a common usage but not actually the real name

I'm sure the youngests here had never seen a safety pin

But why using the earth ground ?
I'm sure that the USB one is connected to the battery 0V and it's better to use the same power source for GPIO pins

This is the most easiest and safest way to enter RCM for people with no jigs. There is no possibility of wear and tear on the pin as only slight contact is enough, the main force of the pin is taken by the metal chassis. This should be stickied.

And how should I ground it? Should I be touching the safety pin with my hand at the same time? Or is it just fine as long as the safety pin touches the 10th pin?

The tip of the pin should be touching the chassis of the switch not the pin 10 directly. Just a slight contact with the pin is enough. Maybe that acts as the ground or we ourself act as the ground
