Shortly after upgrading to 5.0 my switch started getting orange screen on bootup (after Nintendo Logo but no switch animation). You can't enter standard recovery mode because it goes to full screen orange. I put that switch aside and took it back out for RCM fun this week. I am able to boot the payloads and see all keys and able to do Nand backup with ipl. Tried to do Linux booting...switch shuts down after kernel loads in PC terminal window. Can't find it on the PC USB bus with lsusb after loading.
Does anyone with an Orange screen of death have the same results? Or where you able to boot into Linux? I can only speculate that it is a hardware fault at this point.
Could there be a way to check hardware in RCM?
I don't know how many dead switch are out there but I am willing to donate this one to science to see if it can be fixed with a payload.

Did you use a 3rd party cable, charger or dock?
I have two official Nintendo docks. But I did have an USB to LAN adapter connected on side. The lan adapter was working all threw v3.0-v5.0. That could be the only thing that I think Nintendo would think was 3rd party. It was supported since launch and I never had a problem until v5.0 bricked my switch. Hours and hours of Zelda and Mario kart with no problems and then 20 minutes of new Kirby on v5 firmware... Crash and orange on boot.

Based on his post, he's already powered it down completely. He even tried booting into recovery mode with the same result. Seems this is a different type of software/hardware issue causing the orange screen to appear.
Whilst i appreciate it maybe a different cause the symptoms are identical and the OP didn't explicitly say he had tried that method (from what i read it can be caused by different things). Worth identifying if they have tried holding the power down for 1 min then firing up (given this is one of Nintendo's main recs for fixing this).

If not how long have you had the unit? Under 12 months? If so you should be able to swap it at the place you bought it. If not then it's a round trip to Nintendo!

And with that a nice 5.xx update to block homebrew access cuz theyre gonna assume thats what he tried and caused the orange screen

?? FG is a hardware exploit. No software can block it for early adopters. He was already on 5.0 so HBL wasn't an option anyway.

Well theres a difference between 5.0 and 5.02 whatever they are or whether the revisions alter anything idk (just like how 1.0 needs no hardmod but 5.0 does so software does affect the method used) but i wasnt speaking on FG im talking about the orange screen in general and how Tendo is most likely gonna assume he tried an exploit further motivating them to push the latest update

And IF they have figured out the hardware flaw they may even fix that on his system we dont know tbh so im gonna tell him the safest way before I recommend Tendo getting involved

I see. I believe 5.01 and 5.02 fixed the third-party issues that 5.0 introduced. I think worst case they would flash his NAND so having Linux installed wouldn't matter much. I'm not sure if Linux is installed to SD or not since I haven't messed with it. As for the hardware flaw I think the worst they would do is swap his unit out for a new Markio, but they would only do that if they couldn't fix his original issue (or they lied about it to get a new HW revision out).

Anyway, hoping OP checks in soon so we can figure out what's going on with his unit!

@Maximilious knowing them theyll take any old HW system to fix it and resell to cut down on exploitable systems out there

I definitely recommend that he fixes his current issue before trying to dig into the system, nintendo being a last resort if possible

To be fair if you're going to send it in do it sooner rather than later - otherwise you run more of a chance of having it replaced with an updated revision. They can't be that far away from production now. From what i can tell you can fix that exploit with a newly flashed ROM at the factory. If this was disclosed back in January that's a good 4 months ago...

There's a possibility that @ktemkin may be interested in this, or at least your situation in general.
