Hacking Question "no applications could be found on the sd card."

Not sure if you saw this, but please try it, it worked for me.

that's the first thing i tried with the 128gb, well, needless to say that sd ended up snapped in half in a rage, so i tried again with 32gb same thing

i have given up until another idea im kinda mad i updated from 2.0 for nothing

You must be doing something wrong, that is simply the fact, these programs are working for thousand of other people around the globe, in self-hosted and other formats. I compile all my own apps, and all these pieces of software are working pretty well for now. You seem to kind of not want to follow others advice so why not just figure it out yourself?

I love to be helpful, you can find plenty of threads here showing that. I tried to help here, and I guess I could not. Others tried to help, and they could not either. I just feel like he's convinced that his stuff doesn't work and is almost blaming everyone attempting to help him here, maybe i'm wrong?

Oh, sorry, I didn’t read the whole thread. Thought you were telling him he updated for nothing, but you were actually doing the opposite...

@OP if the card is fat32 and you can run /hbmenu.nro off the root, it should be able to see the /switch folder as well. I’m not sure what other advice to give.

yeah :/ hbmenu loads fine, it just tells me there is no applications once loaded i've downloaded and re downloaded many nro's multiple times

I'm sure it's something simple you're missing, but we will never know, because once you figure it out and realize it's something you did wrong your ego will not allow you to admit it. So this thread will die and nothing constructive will have ever came of it. I did nothing to you but try to help you solve your problem, as did others, in the future, I will refrain from doing that.

...he's literally asking for advice, and trying to let people know what he's tried and not tried. He's slightly annoyed he's been asked to do the same thing several times, despite the evidence showing that's not the problem.

He's tried fixing it at least 3 times apiece, every time someone brought it up. he's literally taken every advice and responded with how that advice didn't work. An image of his folder structure is his next step, but that's hardly likely to help. what advice is he not taking? Seriously...you seem to be missing something and creating a nice strawman to dump on. calm yourself. Let actually helpful people try and help and stop trying to derail.

Sounds like a dud. Does it work in your pc? Does another card work in your switch? These two tasks will narrow down your problem then go from there

So far you've used two micro sd cards, correct? changed them both to FAT32? And ensured your folder structure is the same as has been recommended on both sd cards?

Is there anything else interesting about your switch? out of region, how you updated, etc. etc.?

It is quite possible there are some other unknown variables the OP, us, or even the developers, are unaware of. If hbmenu works but another app renamed to hbmenu doesn't, then wouldn't that narrow it down to the app being the problem?

Its much less helpful, if "I guess for some people it works, and for some it doesnt" sticks as the outcome here. As no one was able to help the other person out - lets be more concerned about the overall message this thread portraits, than the individual outcomes. But only because of that, because individual issues are very important otherwise.

Potential other issues (some even not related to usererror at all) - could range from "not being able to copy a folder" ("I pressed the home button, what now?") to "not knowing what a folder is", to the USB "thingy" used failing intermittently to fake high capacity SDcards bought from ebay or third party Amazon sellers... Every one though is at least in part unlikely - which is part of the problem here.

Find someone for whom it works. Compare methods. You can promote yourself as doing all the right stuff on the internet, and we have no way of knowing, if you really do.

There still is a rule of probability at work though that states, if you are the only one with a process related tech issue - out of 100 or even 1000 people, chances are - that its you and not the process.

Todays chips made out of silicon, are much, much, much more prone to instabilities, or failures that might cause a process not to work one time out of thousands (cause an instability, cause a crash), than to a failure state, that results in "one person not being able to reproduce the results every one else is getting". So if you've tried this twice - and no one else is having the issues you are having.. Probability wise - it doesn't look good for you... The same goes for universal standards such as USB. Filesystems...

An "accidental" read or write (as in "no one could have predicted it not happening") - is usually not something that hackers, or programmers deal with.

Which in part is also why geeks gravitate toward technology. Reproducible results. We like those.

When tech companies have to interact with the rest of the general public though, they usually hire telefon support people who are very efficient in telling you, that you are absolutely correct - and now, go on and buy something else - because your issue is so complicated - it couldnt be reproduced by anyone but you... Then you feel good, and buy the next product. Then you give a helpful Amazon review ("I likes this product, because it works - I've bought other products in the past - and they didn't works. I really like the one that works. Everyone buy those! 4/5 stars, because I didn't like blue.").

edit: Also - if you think about it, this is also why "public beta tests" can be a thing. If there would be "Bob", or "Timmy" issues it would not be possible to fix those before release.. So it always comes back to "if you are the only person that can produce it", thats a bad outcome. For everyone involved.

This is the odd moment, when I confess, that I might have experienced a similar issue, and have since forgotten about it... As I remember (just now) I've had issues of .nro's in folders getting displayed on the first day of release...

I've just looked up my postings back then, and it definitely was a thing...

I remember that I formated the card to FAT32 using guiformat with an Allocation Unit Size of 32K (read this for reference: https://switch.hacks.guide/ ) - and after that, the issues were gone.

I had reformated the SD to FAT32 using the Windows disk format tool before - without success.

If you can - try it out. (Move existing files to your PC first, use guiformat with 32k cluster size to format the card, then move the files back over.)

Allocation Unit size might have been related to similar issues in the past: https://gbatemp.net/threads/allocation-unit-size.354696/ Yet it would be odd to affect only files in folders. (Also maybe try to hit install on HBL once more... due to a lack of documentation, we are not sure what it does, but I have done that on day 1 as well... )
