I've hacked my ps2 slim and rebug is all set up with webman, cobra, multiman, and reactpsn.

I've watched several videos and it seems like there are different preferences. Some people use the games folder, some people use pkg files, and some prefer split isos. I have a 4tb external (MBR and fat32 - single partition). because of this, I have a 4gb file limit. What is the best format for me to install for the most convenience?

All formats are equally convenient, once installed (ok, an installed package is 2 less clicks), FTP uploads solve the annoyance of limited-support NTFS vs limited-support split files (especially for package installations)

what I hate is having some things as iso/folder and some as package, accessed through different places (that's why I'm really into making PS1/PS2 classics :) )

regarding internal vs external space... are all packages I ftp over and install - automatically placed on my external drive?
I read that some files must be put on the internal drive - for certain games. Is this true? or can everything be placed completely on the externals?

No, unless you use a GAMEDATA redirect mod (Webman has one) - in which case you're limited by FAT32 and 4 GB files (depending of course on the contents of the package)

PS2 games, "of course" as always, don't work from external either (no PS3 OS running to actually bind/link the paths together)

I just wouldn't use externals myself, too much hassle (and unsightly)

you've convinced me to upgrade the internal HD (just did it yesterday) - MUCH better. thanks.
