A little bit of explanation: I found out a while ago that my New 3DS (not XL, the small one) has both TN displays which didn't bothered me much, until I saw some pictures of comparison between TN and IPS. Now, I definitely can't buy a new one because they don't produce the model I have anymore, and I don't want the New 3DS XL Ultra Large KFC Edition. I bought my New 3DS when it came out so I definitely can't return it.
Now, I tried searching on Aliexpress for replacements of the top screen (at least) but couldn't find anything since historically the New 3DS model has been a bitch about replacement parts. Is there anything I can do? Maybe send it to Nintendo hoping they change the screens? Or maybe just live with it, screens has low density anyway. Help me please!! I'm having an existential crysis :(

IPS is made for other people to view that isn't the player, so I wouldn't worry about it.

You clearly haven't seen the difference between a TN and an IPS display in real life. TN will look disgusting once you take a brief glace at IPS. And this is all from a 0° viewing angle.

For what it's worth, 3D is worse on the IPS screens.

A lot of people have trouble telling the TN and IPS screens apart so I would say that the difference is actually pretty small.

Every report I've seen suggests that the TN 3DS displays are the ones with worse ghosting, and its really irritating me in 2D sidescrollers, especially with lots of black. Its the main reason I'm contemplating seeking out an IPS model.

The "scanlines" issue can be mostly fixed with dev config tool ("flicker" option) and is something TN displays can also encounter.

Oh yes, because I love having scanlines and ghosting from an IPS display.
Both are kinda pointless arguments unless you sit there and intentionally stare at the scanlines and watch for ghosting. The objectively better picture quality is well worth that trade off.

I don't believe the New 3DS (non-XL) variety ever came with IPS panels, so the disappoint should rest solely on Nintendo dropping the ball on this one.

You can try directly contacting those Aliexpress retailers for custom fabricating IPS lcds but be ready to drop your pants and spread your cheeks if you go this route.

You don't know what you're talking about.

The difference between IPS screens and TN screens is drastic not only when viewing both at angles, but ALSO viewing both head on. I've compared my dual IPS New 3DS XL head on with a dual TN New 3DS XL and the IPS screen 3DS has better colours, better contrast, is more sharper, and the list goes on.

Yeah the difference is crazy! Nintendo could've at least done us the favour of using at least a VA panel instead of TN.

Actually some of them did, like the early manufactured Pokémon 20th Edition New 3DS consoles. A few people have reported getting dual IPS screens on theirs. Also some of the Super Mario 3D Land Edition New 3DS bundles had dual IPS screens as well. I had one and even though it was really nice, I ended up selling it as the screens were still too small. Not only that, but the console itself was small and it gave my hands cramps pretty quickly when holding it. My New 3DS XL with dual IPS screens fixed all of my gripes that I had with the smaller variant.

If it makes you feel any better, even the IPS screens are pretty trash in quality, you're not gaining much.

But still an order of magnitude better than the horrible TN screens Nintendo sourced. The gain in quality from the IPS screen 3DS compared to the TN screen 3DS is astronomical.

Or they could’ve never had used TN at all in the first place, and gone with IPS screens since day one. How much more extra would this have cost Nintendo? $5? $10? The end results and consumer satisfaction would’ve been worth it.

But no, they had to be scummy and inconsistent and have us play the lottery.

Ssshhh. OP didn't need to know. Now he'll go on a frantic goose chase for the next to impossible to find N3DS with IPS. You blew it.

Back then, IPS lcd didn't gain traction until after high end laptops, cellphones, and tablets fielded them in large quantities. Nintendo doesn't get first pickings while contending with other tech brands when they were placing their orders for IPS screens. The few manufacturers that could produce IPS at the time could only do so with limited quantity until output could match & satisfy market damand.

Had Nintendo did what you and I would have liked them to with only IPS, the 3DS would have been a financial failure. In fact, I'm surprised Nintendo was able to produce any systems with IPS in the first place.

Although not a steadfast rule, the least evil thing Nintendo did do was sell most of those 3DS with IPS screens as limited editions releases. You get your moneys worth.

Also let's be honest, outside of a few tech junkies like us online, the other 98% of 3ds owners don't know and probably can't see the difference between TN and IPS.

Hell i am a tech junkie and i had a hard time when i had a tn and an ips system right next to each other, the "Huge" difference that people always talk about is way overblown, and they're almost identical in actual use, i've seen several people complain about having one screen type, only to check it with 3dsident and see they actually had the other[/QUOTE]

Umm, I do see a huge difference between IPS and TN, and yes I can tell right away... TN looks washed out as hell.
