Hacking Phat PS3 Downgrade Without Hardware Flasher Question

Hi, I'm a PS3 newb and I'm somewhat confused by various posts saying that I absolutely need a hardware flasher like E3 to downgrade.

I have a Phat PS3 80Gb (CECHK) and it has 4.81 currently installed.

The instructions and tools from http://redthetrainer.com/ don't seem to require any flasher. Are there any cons to this method? it seems odd that many of the prominent forums don't have this as a big sticky post...

Is it reliable? Any suggestions?

I would like to buy and upgrade the hard drive... should I do that first? Or is it easy to change the HDD later?

I hacked my slim using this method, 100% safe. Albeit a little bit of pain in the ass as the exploit doesn't work all the time. Just keep trying until its done

Just a little thing, you don't need to downgrade to hack, 4.81 is fully hack ablhackable and you can install cfw from there, no need to downgrade to 3.55.
 
So I still haven't done the upgrade... this is probably the most basic step, but Im stuck at the exploit.

"Open the browser & browse to the ps3xploit.com website"

So I can open the website, but when I click the PS3 Exploit link on the top left I get an error in the PS3 browser.

Set the actual exploit page (the one with the pink background) as homepage and reboot the console, and use Ethernet, to maximize chances of browser exploit success; in any case, don't give up!

Set homepage to blank then exit web. Open broweser again and input your ip/port. Remember you have a Nor model. The dumper dumps your Nor and the writer flashes your Nor. You need the 2.0 plexploit writer.
 
I think its doing it now... some out of date url's. got the first part of the exploit completed... now just waiting for the flash. patiently... it has been about 10 minutes and still going.
 
So I was using older methods and they failed. when I switched to the PS3Xploit HDD method (which is very straightforward) it worked on the first shot. So now I have CFW (Rebug 4.81.2 Thibobo). I still have no idea what I'm doing though. Can I installed any CFW now? Like the latest Rebug?

Sure!

I would recommend you to QA flag your console (if you're still on Rebug 4.81, go to Game > Package Manager > Install > HDD > Rebug Toolbox, open Game > Rebug Toolbox, should be first option of the last column), which will greatly simplify downgrading and allow the debug menu on non-Rebug CFWs, if you will ever be interested in such features

Nah, unless you really want to turn your console into a DEX, which takes different operating systems than CEX - and Rebug 4.81 (not other CFWs including Rebug Lite) can give you many features of DEX while staying on CEX
