I've given it some thought and decided to buy a flashcart for my Old 3DS. The one I'm getting is the R4 Gold Pro 2018 from nds-card, since it's the cheapest and I don't really mind the timebomb (I heard this can be bypassed by setting the system date back).

Just a quick question, is the seller (nds-card) trustworthy etc? I dont wanna be buying a bootleg or having my money stolen

I don't understand why people keep buying these timebomb carts, they don't deserve your money. As long as people keep buying them they'll keep making them. You're contributing to the problem and signalling that it's okay to do this.
If you set the time back you will eventually run into issues connecting online, because SSL certificates are only valid within a certain time range (usually of 1-2 years), if the date is set back to before the certificate is valid a lot of online features will stop working.

This. Don't be an idiot and buy a card with a time bomb.

Get this one if you can. It's arguably the best one.
Oops, I guess I'm an idiot then :/ It's too late to cancel shipment now but when I get some more money, I'll get this one instead. Thank you :)

Looking back, I guess I was pretty uneducated on the matter, but thank you for this information. I didn't realise that these purchases were contributing to a problem that shouldn't really exist. It's bad what the manufacturer is doing by adding these timebombs that limits the control a user has over the cart, and making them buy a new one after it has gone off and limiting online functionalities if they set the date back :/

Yes, we should avoid to buy those timebomb flashcarts even though they are cheaper.

I've been looking at getting a flash cart that will work for DS games on a 3DS running Luma without needing to boot a loader first. Ideally I would get the R4i Gold 3DS Plus. However I am in the UK and can only find for sale based abroad. Given flash carts are illegal in the UK having one coming through customs with my address on makes me nervous. The only ones I can find for sale already in the UK are these R4 Gold Pro 2018 on ebay. I'm aware they are time bombed but how easy is that to bypass without messing with the clock? I know we shouldn't be supporting these carts but it seems it is one of these or nothing at all.

That is a nice one, but from what I understand the only advantage that one has over a cheaper one is that it functions as a NTR Boot Loader as well as a flash card. So if you already have custom firmware installed you don't really need the NTR Boot Loader part. Also, I think the card OP is referring to doesn't have a Time bomb, at least that is what the seller is claiming (check the question on page 2, they said no time bomb). If they're lying that doesn't bode well as the official partner of GBATemp...
