Is the Stargate 3DS the best solution for the latest Firmware and to leave the console as is? Is there anyway to get your saves from your Carts to keep playing on the SG3DS or do you have to start over on the .3DS rom? What happens to saves that are on your internal SD card? What happens to anything else on the internal SD Card?

if you really don't want to mod your console, and you are okey to pay more then sky3ds plus and you want to play DS games on the same card, then stargate is for you.
i think the save file just like sky3DS and GW system, the save is encrypted, but does it matter if the save on the internal SD card?

you have another choice of course, pay $20 to get NTRboot DS card to install CFW to your console then restore your DS card ability, you can save $60 and all your games will be inside your SD card, also SG support is bad, i don't recommend it.

Stargate in my personal opinion is a scam for what it provides. It provides less functionality than a regular ds flashcart and costs double the price. Ds flashcarts can load ds roms as well as install ntrboot. Stargate cannot load ds roms and provides 3ds rom loading instead, but advertises ntrboot which allows for the same thing but easier and cheaper. Nowadays, modding a console only costs $2 with the seedminer method. I suggest you use Stargate to install ntrboot and ditch the room loading feature, as using a cfw to load ROMs is much easier.

Stargate does load DS roms though? Or am I remembering that wrong?

The best solution is CFW. This method, although not the easiest, is the cheapest on latest firmware: https://gbatemp.net/threads/seedminer-single-system-dsiware-injection.495685/

I've heard that once cfw is installed it loses Rom loading functionality. I've never been able to test this.
The DS mode doesn't work with CFW, but if you have CFW then buying a Stargate is pointless anyway.
Well, it's kind of pointless period, since a ntrboot compatible DS flashcart is both cheaper and better.

I was hesitant to install CFW because I didn't want to lose current Saves/Data. I have a DS Lite and R4DS in addition to having a R4i 3DS so... What are you thoughts?

Cfw is no different from a vanilla firmware besides a few patches here and there. A cfw 3ds will not only retain it's save data, but will be completely indistinguishable from a regular 3ds in nearly every way. For more information on what a cfw is and how harmless it is, I go into it in more detail in this post:
I'm going to say this now so I can copy and paste this into other threads to explain exactly what a cfw is:

Basically, a cfw (Custom FirmWare), is several patches applied to the 3ds OS launched via some sort of exploit (in most cases b9s). These patches range from signature patches (allowing for the installation of CIA files with invalid tickets) to the Rosalina system module that pops up when L+DOWN+SELECT are held. Otherwise, there is no difference between a regular vanilla 3ds and a 3ds with a cfw launcher installed (as a cfw is never really installed. What is really being installed is something that launches a cfw. That's why godmode9 and other payloads can be loaded too). This means that the 3ds can be updated as normal, with no need to worry about losing games or saves. Updating functions just like normal. The same goes for updating games, which is discussed in detail later. In fact, you could install b9s (boot9strap) and use your 3ds like a completely normal 3ds, and there would be absolutely zero difference between that 3ds and a regular vanilla one. The only way to tell would be to send it in to Nintendo.

Due to a lack of account system on the 3ds at launch (Nintendo network IDs were shoehorned in later, and thus don't function quite right), all 3ds games acquired illegitimately (CIA files) function identically to games that were purchased and installed through legitimate means. This means that pirated games can be updated and played online just like normal games. The only exception to this is if the game is from a different region then the 3ds itself. Those games muse be updated via a dumped update CIA file, which are easy to come by.

Lastly there comes the fear of being banned from Nintendo's online services, which for the most part have been blown out of proportion. As stated earlier, a cfw 3ds is no different then a regular 3ds aside from a few patches here and there. This makes it 100 percent impossible for Nintendo to detect a console running a cfw, and thus impossible to ban. Even running games invested via a cia file online are guaranteed to work fine online. Now this isn't to say that bans are impossible to come by. Many cfw users have been banned for unknown reasons. Though not much is known about these bans, there are several things that are known. 1: it is not caused by running a cfw or using pirated games. 2: users who do not use CIA Homebrew apps and instead use Rosalina 3dsx loading have been shown to be unbanned. 3: cheating online or playing leaked roms before they have been released will 100 percent result in a ban. From these clues, it can be concluded that people who simply use Rosalina to load 3dsx Homebrew instead of using custom Homebrew CIA files are nearly guaranteed to be safe from any future banwaves.

Again this might be a bit long to read, but I wanted to get this info out there, and so I would never have to bring this up ever again. People are free to quote this in their own posts if they feel this gets a good point across. I might update this post for updated information and/or spelling corrections. This was typed in the middle of the night on mobile so spelling mistakes are bound to be abundant.

I came across a thread where grips of people were getting banned left and right running the CFW. Is this still and will it always be a possibility? I only use the 3DS for online use so this would be a deal breaker.

People were getting banned for being idiots and going online with games that hadn't come out officially yet.

@ToolPunk Having reviewed the Stargate3DS I can advise it does work well for what it does. However, at the moment it cannot load the more recent 3DS roms like Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon. To play online you still need a private header and you still need to inject them into the rom in order to get online at all.

Also, both of my review samples seem to have bricked themselves. One arrived bricked and the team were nice enough to send another. This one went wrong after the review was written - though, in fairness the review samples were not a true representation of the retail product.

If I were to choose between a Sky3DS+ and a Stargate3DS, I would go for the Sky3DS+. I've had far less hassle with that card. Admittedly, it's a little more fiddly to get online games working, but only in the sense, that it creates a txt file for each game on the memory card.

If you need any help with either, especially setting up private headers to play online, feel free to drop me a message

Though going with neither and buying a regular nds flashcart still gives more features for less money.

That actually is a valid argument, however, I would suggest reading the last big paragraph in my cfw post/essay:

Stargate 3DS owner here. I also made a review in the Stargate tread.

It is a cart that works... BUT:
  • No updates have been released to date meaning you can not play Pokemon Ultra Sun/ Moon or some other newer games
  • Their servicedesk is rubbish. They won't help you.
  • There are a lot of problems with the cheaper brands of SD's.

I use it myself... but since it does not update and can't handle CIA etc... I find it overpriced.

Well since I have Soft Modded (Which for some reason these days falls under CFW now...) my vWii Mode (Original Wii had Solderless Mod), Soft Modded my WiiU and Know NOT to do stupid things like cheat online games, install early leaked games, I chose to do more research and move ahead with CFW.

I learned that I could turn my R4i 3DS RTS (WiFi) into an ntrboot flashcart allowing me to run the files needed to install CFW. From there I followed a couple videos and tutorials (which I weeded through because soooo many people make things way harder than it ever needs to be >.<) and ended up with a 3DS that has the same soft mod features as my WiiU.

It's great that you got it working, but you really shouldn't be using Youtube tutorials. They're almost always outdated. Use something like 3ds.guide instead.

Oh no, I make sure the videos are current and I just watch them for general ideas of how things are being done. For instance, the magnet location on the 3DS XL. I did though end up following the guide at 3ds.guide for the installation and updating of everything.
