Underground piracy scene release group known as BigBlueBox (BBB) have just released a master key for the Nintendo Switch.

In their 60th Nintendo game cartridge dump - a process where the group rips all of the data from a retail Nintendo Switch cartridge and then uploads it to the internet, is an .nfo file, an information requirement when packaging illegal warez. It is in this file that BBB have revealed the first of 32 Nintendo Switch Master Keys, used for firmwares 1.0.0-2.3.0:

Someone made a 'freedom of speech flag' that uses the key cited in the NFO (called such by the original which used hexadecimal HTML color codes and the last two hexadecimal digits of the AACS key were represented as black text imposed over the bottom right to represent the AACS 1.0 high level decryption key that leaked - the infamous 09 F9 [...] one) though won't link this new flag here in case even that is considered a violation.

For background on the original flag, see the Wikipedia article on 'illegal number' -- and for those who do not really grasp what hexadecimal is, despite it featuring the letters A-F it is still considered a number.

So, there are three of these flags to date that I'm aware of: AACS 1.0 key, the infamous PS3 (authoring?) key, and now the firmware key for the Nintendo Switch.

It's actually a pretty neat idea, whomever thought of that idea originally back during the Streisand Effect of the AACS consortium trying to DMCA every website that quoted the AACS 1.0 key in full -- and eventually realizing it was a futile effort and gave up. Now even Wikipedia quotes that key.

Of course, anyone can make their own flag using any image editor that supports specifying colors using HTML hexadecimal RGB codes and just partitioning the key to determine the appropriate number of color bars, etc.

I've always found 'illegal number' cases fascinating. And criminalization of the circumvention of crypto in general. The first case I followed was the legal hoopla surrounding DeCSS - which for the first time made it possible to digitally copy a DVD (as opposed to recording the composite line out, or using a component capture device to record it, or screen capture software). A Streisand effect occured there as well, with mirrors of the DeCSS source code popping up on random websites in defiance of the media conglomerates trying to wipe out all copies.

It's a back and forth game between corporations that try to lock down devices we buy and restrict what we may do with hardware we paid for, and reverse engineers that serve as the eternal heroes for finding ways to unshackle these devices. In the case of DeCSS, it was made by someone who was not happy that Linux (at the time) could not play DVDs. So he decided to break its encryption so that Linux users could use open source software to play DVDs they bought (as opposed to using proprietary trash like PowerDVD in WINE).
