I still believe that the two 'Hero is triumphant' timelines both happen. I never read Hyrule Historia cover to cover (I read parts of it with a friend; I just read the relevant text that you quoted online, however), but from what I read, what you said, and what I know from games released after the publication of it, there are a lot of unexplained tidbits (from older AND newer games) that, if you assume that the Child and Adult timelines are one and the same, make things completely clear.

The only way that this could happen is if, after Ganon is defeated in the future, Link has the option of choosing to prevent the Master Sword from being pulled and warning the Royal Family, or going back and properly living his childhood in the age and time he came from, and in both cases, the events of Majora's Mask happen, but Hyrule is never flooded in the second case, since Ganondorf still has entered the Sacred Realm.

Also, I'm not trying to debunk Hyrule Historia; I'm just saying that it WAS only written to appease fans, and rushed ahead of the release of Breath of the Wild's initially anticipated release (probably so that they wouldn't have to rewrite half the book to account for it). As a result, one might want to take some or all lore from it with a grain of salt.
The Child Timeline and the Adult Timeline are completely contradictory.

In the Adult Timeline, Ganondorf is sealed by the sages. After escaping, it is explicitly stated there's no hero, so Hyrule is flooded. Hyrule is later washed away completely by the King's wish, and Ganondorf is stabbed in the head and killed. There's no room in-between those events for the events of Twilight Princess to occur.

In the Child Timeline, Ganondorf is imprisoned in the Twilight Realm instead, escapes, and the Hero of Twilight stabs him in the belly and kills him. There's also no flood.

We know for a fact that it's the same Ganondorf in both games, but you're saying he died two different ways in a singular timeline?

I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying that there could be a FOURTH branch in the timeline - one where there IS still a hero, the flood never happens, and Ganondorf is resurrected in a different way. Also, Hyrule Historia is not by all means 'complete' or 'concise', according to the authors (source):

Though Hyrule Historia provided the fans with an official timeline, the creators mention that various details had to be overlooked and that fans should just enjoy the series and the new timeline. It is said that the order of events and the details within the timeline change according to who is weaving the tales, and additionally, history is still being spun. Therefore, it may be safe to assume that, years down the road, various aspects of Hyrule Historia may become obsolete as new information could take its place.

The fourth timeline, as the series currently stands, wouldn't make sense, and would only serve to unnecessarily complicate things. What exactly are you thinking about in the series that the current adult/child timeline split doesn't make sense with?

We can't assume there's a fourth timeline unless Nintendo says so. Until then, we can only operate under the assumption that there are only three timelines. I can't think of any time-travel events that would cause a fourth timeline to exist, but that didn't stop the Downfall Timeline premise from happening.

The only way that I see a fourth timeline happening is one that splits off the adult timeline where Link is resurrected/reincarnated before Ganon comes in to wreck everything (like what I thought BotW would be before I played it), but there is not yet a game that's come out in which that scenario makes sense

I'm gonna have to leave this as-is for tonight, as I am going to bed.

P.S.: Merry Christmas to all Tempers from Germany! It's midnight there in 5 minutes, so I'm giving you guys a heads up! :D

Oops, I did the time zone calculations wrong. It's midnight in GMT-1 countries. :/

I don't see any need for a fourth timeline, so I consider it unlikely. The only reason three timelines exist is out of necessity.

I'm out. Discussing canon just gets too complicated

:D Zelda canon and lore isn't for everyone, especially when it gets complicated. For me and other timeline/lore topic-discussers, it's the bread and butter of the franchise that draws us in. It's part of what makes the games fun and worth playing to us, I imagine.

I just don't get it, why are people saying BOTW is not a great game?

Yeah, it's not the same as the past games, but that's the point. Yeah, there could be more dungeons, and more places to explore, more puzzles to solve, etc...

But this is the first Zelda game that Nintendo made truly Open World, with this amount of freedom. This is Nintendo's first open world game, right?

Name a studio that got Open World perfect on thier first try. Not a single one came close on thier first try. But Nintendo did a pretty damn good job for thier first open world game.

BOTW set the perfect foundation for future Zelda games. Zelda games can only get better after BOTW.

I can't wait to see what they will do with the next Zelda.

And you also have to remember the Hardware that BOTW has to run on. BOTW had to be developed first for the WiiU, then ported to the switch. And either one of those consoles are not really considered "Next Gen" or Current Gen, Hardware wise anyway.

The game is still HUGE in size, and yet there are barely any loading screens when traveling from location to location on foot. Just imagine there were 10 to 15 huge dungeons like in OOT, with tons of puzzles, and secret locations.

You have to ask yourself, "Would the Hardware of either console hold up?"

If it was released on PS4, XBONE, or PC? Sure it would. But it's a Nintendo exclusive, and Nintendo is not known for thier Powerful hardware in thier consoles now a days.

No Soundtracks, No Story, that's why i personally think it's not that great of a game.
Yes the game is changed from the old LOZ games, and it have some cool ideas and it was fun to play, but at the same time it's empty.
Most of the time i felt like a lonely child in an island with nothing to do except throwing rocks and chopping trees.
There was no plot and no motivation except Defeat Ganon which we keep defeating him in every damn game from the past 30 years, and that's all.

and btw the OP is talking about the timeline :glare:

I'd fucking cut off my right nut if I got a Ocarina game with the engine and graphics used in Botw.
Good God yes. Change the shader and we'd have a proper remaster there

Honestly they could probably port over most of the models from OoT3D and most of them would look fine with the new lighting engine. Dammit, now I want a Switch HD collection release :c

Hero of Time Saga:
Ocarina of Time HD & Majora's Mask HD
Nintendo's dropping the ball here, this would sell like hot cakes.

We'd probably collide with the galaxy Andromeda before we get to experience that. xD
