If you mean homebrew on its own, no, but it is more expensive to have just homebrew than CFW & homebrew. Anything you can do with plain homebrew can be done with CFW so it would be silly to spend more and get less. Even if you didn't want the CFW-only abilities it would still be a silly idea to purposefully get only homebrew.

If you have 11.4+ look at https://3ds.guide/homebrew-launcher-(alternatives) but don't bother downloading the boot9strap files because you can't get CFW with plain homebrew. Would require you to buy a 3DS game that could be rare and hard to find and expensive, or a less rare game plus a PowerSaves device. Whereas CFW could be installed for less than $15 see https://3ds.guide/ntrboot

Well, to install CFW with ntrboot. It's easy & quick (if you don't count the time waiting for shipping of the cartridge).

I used the R4i Gold as mentioned in the guide and it worked great but there are a few different ones that could be cheaper. Just make sure to buy from nds-card.com so you won't be scammed or be sent the wrong cart. And check the guide very very carefully to make sure you get the right one and not just one that looks similar.

No when you're done you can sell it if you wish. Or keep it for DS games.

You only need it to install cfw. You don't need it after that.

No because it shuts down before I can take a picture. It's the "sighaxed firm could not be installed" error
