I thought it'd be Dark Souls, then Cuphead came along. Of course, if we're including the old school, then Battletoads in Battlemaniacs takes the cake for sure IMO (NES was before my time).

Cuphead is not so hard. It's difficulty is an overblown myth.
Battletoads is legit hard as fuck, in an evil way. Great game.

Was Mario 64 difficult? If you said yes, then yes. If you said no, then no. Pretty simple. All platforming Mario games seem to be around the same difficulty: not at all difficult. Same goes for the Galaxy games. They're only mildly difficult if you try to run through the entire board instead of having patience.

True, it's a few select bosses that make up most of the difficulty curve. If we're being honest that's true of Dark Souls as well though. The only reason newer games are easier is because they're actually fair (except roguelikes).

Cuphead is hard due to people playing games that hold their hand all through the game. Id have to say though it's extremely difficult playing with another person due to confusing who's who along with the bosses and each other's shots being mixed giving you a tough challenge.

for some reason i believe nearly every mario game is pretty easy..

i been playing the mario rpgs lately i like them alot but they are so frikkin easy, almost no challenge.

(paper mario NGC version and i play the superstar saga 3ds).
way too easy, but i dont mind, i love the charm in it.

the games are fun that is all that matters !!
odyssey looks incredibly fun.
