I plan on getting a 3.55 OFW PS3 this week. I have no experience with PS3 modding though. Please make responses as noob-friendly as possible because I have no knowledge of them.

My questions are:

First, I read about the REBUG CFW. Is it really just as simple as put the update file in the right folder on a USB and update via storage?
Can I install PSX games to the XMB? I read something about you can load them from USB but I don't have a HDD to store them.
Can I install PS2Classics like this?
Can you "make" your own custom PSX games, such as ones not on the PSN Store?
How would I go about installing PS3 games to the internal HDD?
How can I stop myself being banned from online/PSN? I plan to play a few games online however I know the risk of CFW online (Just look at 3DS, even if it's an easy solution) and want to minimise/eradicate the chance of being banned.
Can I earn trophies in PS3 games like normal?

And something more speculative:

I was reading up about PSP on PS3 and you can convert the ISOs of PSP to like, Minis on PS3 or something? I'm not sure what they're called. Is there a detailed guide on this?

Please give me as much insight as you possibly can, if you can, it'd be really helpful. Thanks~

Yes it's usually as easy as just updating but sometimes you may need to do it in recovery mode. Also you need an HDD to boot so unless you get one you can't do anything

1) yes, as easy as updating via storage. be sure you don't have a disc inserted, be sure you don't have network enabled.
2) I don't know
3) don't know (I'm still on ofw3.41, didn't mess with cfw yet)
4) don't know
5) installing game to hdd can be done from different ways:
disc to hdd (using the loader, multiman or anothergame dumper)
pc to external hdd (just copy the game extracted files to the fat32 external hdd)
pc to internal hdd using ftp (if the game has files bigger than 4GB; you can use FTP to copy file to internal PS4 HDD)
external hdd to internal hdd (and internal to external), this can be done with tools, like multiman too. it can split/unsplit files bigger than 4GB automatically to/from FAT32/internal hdd.
some games work only on internal (if it didn't chance since 2011... I didn't use ps3 for a long time)
6) you can't stop being banned. better way is to play offline, always. never think you are safe and won't be banned. if you log to psn, you'll get banned one day.
7) trophies are working fine, but syncing with PSN can ban your account.
There are different method to prevent a ban, but ultimately you end banned.
8) yes, you can convert psp to PSPmini, I don't remember which guide I used. (tool old, sorry)
I wrote two PS3 guides, one to explain how multiman 2.x was working, and the other was to create/convert games to "psn like" games installed on XMB. it's probably unneeded now, games can be listed on XMB directly with multiman plugins.

sorry that I've been out of PS3 hacking for years, some of my answers could be outdated too, read more and wait for other user's reply to check if mine are still valid.

If you don't want to fork out $100 (or more) on a Fat, or Slim PS3 or want to buy the E3 Flasher if your buying one on a higher FW. (or whatever that thing is called.) You can buy a 4.81 console (which is the latest FW as of now.) And wait to see how progress is going
The deals as far as I know, if you want to hack a PS3, the value it goes for is more than a PS4 and to get everything you need. (at least the first model priced at 199 I think, less if used.)

I'd just wait considering the progress going on right now. Its better to buy something cheaper than to spend a bunch of money that may be not worth as much maybe months from now (or years.)
That's just me tho.

I have a rebug for over 4 years ( I think )..

PSX - Yes (Fully playable)

PS2 - Yes (Some games are unplayable/or glitches)

PSP - Yes (Some games are unplayable/or glitches)

Online - Likely to be banned.

Trophies - Yes. Normal

Alright, that clears a few things up. Will look up more about PSX/PS2/PSP games.

Well this one I'm getting hasn't cost a lot so :D

Alright so I won't risk going online even though I'd probably just not use a proper profile (I've never owned a PS3, we only have PS4. I want a PS3 mainly for PS3/PSX games.)
PS2/PSP games are gonna be a hit-and-miss then I guess. Not a problem.
Do you have knowledge of how to get the PSX games onto XMB? Say, if I have a .PKG of the game, is it possible to install it?

pretty much yes to all of your questions. you can reduce being banned online by using psn patch, but I personally believe it's what games you play that gets you banned. black ops 2, for example - its eboot scans the internal hdd for certain folders and (probably) sends this information to sony while online. this game has gotten a lot of people banned. also, you can be banned if you cheat. I wouldn't worry about being banned though as long as you're careful.

I think the only online game I would play is GTA V, I'm not into COD and stuff :D I don't want to play for a while though and end up banned but I know that just using CFW can get you banned even without modding a game/using cheats etc

well, psn patch disables cfw syscalls and erases your game history. it's really the safest way. the plugin even has a feature to not allow psn access unless the plugin is enabled. I'm not sure of the list of games you shouldn't play aside from black ops 2.

No, I am using PSX ISO and PS2 ISO with a WebMan (it is a must and love it) and you need Cobra to enable for them to be playable through Rebug CFW and that's it.

No, you still could be banned anyway. I have seen some people for that and they said they still get banned. NOT SAFE!

Alright so next noob question, what's PSNPatch and how do I use it

Well not playing online isn't a big deal really so I will live without playing online games then

PSNpatch is a multi-functional tool for accessing PSN content on CFW. Note that it is not necessary to use PSNinja or SEN Enabler because PSNpatch includes all of the same features. Keep in mind that no tool is 100% effective in preventing bans.

It's features include:

  • Offline PSN Game activator
  • IDPS + PSID Spoofer
  • Firmware Version Spoofer
  • Syscall Cleaner (Hides CFW)
  • Boot Plugin to block PSN until it has been deemed "safe"
  • Plugin option to disable CFW, clear history, and spoof IDPS via a button combo
  • Option to automatically spoof IDPS at boot (auto-mode)

Idk how cheap it is, but if its a good buy grab it before someone else does. PS3's that have the potential to be hacked (already hacked, or on lower FW but not hacked.) cost way to much and the components go for even more...

I don't want to be that guy and just says "Thanks!" but idk what else to say but, thanks :P

I have mostly put my chances of getting or buying one at rest for the time being until that webkit thing going around finally "releases", Other than backups for the main reason I want to get one, I don't see why else I'd buy a PS3 CFW Console, although having one (in general.) Would be pretty dope.

So I got hold of the console today. I thought it would come clean on 3.55 firmware however the seller seems to have put it on 4.25 Rogero CFW. I want to update to Rebug 4.81 but I tried putting the PS3UPDAT file on my USB and when I go to storage update it says "No applicable update data was found" or something. How do I go about updating it to the latest rebug?

that error occurs if you try to update using a dex update on cex or vice versa. which update did you trying using? D-rex? rex?

edit: btw, you place the update in PS3/UPDATE
