Hacking Can someone help me understand Gateway Flashcard?

I'm confused, why does everyone say Gateway is poo? When the cartridge came out for the time when there was no CFW it looked like a decent card to have around for the time.

Every post I normally go on pointing to anything Gateway is just negative, but I don't get why becuase I never had a gateway (or even knew about it.) I will try to make it simple on how I think the card worked, basically you boot the card up to install some system files to a 3ds so you can boot into a menu and then run the card with an exploit on the settings menu, then you had to format your nand so you can run emunand on your SD Card so you can run your game backups on the system. Are people angry about the card because there unable to update their system nand due to compatibility issues or what?

I'd just like to know for future reference because of speculation that the gateway (makers?) may be making a future flashcard, and I don't want to end up with something bad happening in the future.

The main reasons it gets slated is due to how long it takes rock get a reply from SoonTM and becomes quickly outdated piece of software competing with CFW

Shitty support is probably taking a backseat to the whole bricking aspect.

The Gateway had a problem with clones using their software code. So in one of the versions they released a logic time bomb that would brick (irrevocably damage beyond repair) the 3DS when launched from a non-Gateway device. Oh and sporadic reports that it bricked people using legitimate versions of the Gateway didn't help.

The issue with Gateway3DS stems from several concerns.
1: Their extremely long periods of time without updates, coupled with their poor communication with the community. Users often wait weeks to months without support and basically get "Soon™" as a reply from them. Just like recently they said they were going to announce something on August 13th, yet it's August 20th as of writing this post and still nothing.
2: When they do release something, it's often based on older code. Examples being their A9LH support was limited to V1 and "Fastboot" was just A9LH v1 with their own proprietary code injected into it.
3: Brick code, bricking a 3DS is just too much of an extreme measure taken to prevent clones.
4: Lack of basic features that have become a standard in free CFWs, the most important being FIRM0/1 protection.

There's other issues as well, but a lot of them start becoming subjective from here.

Because it's not 2014 anymore. Their shoddy A9LH and their lack of FIRM protection leading to people bricking N3DS consoles and O3DS consoles coming magically unhacked didn't help things, especially since it was pure laziness on their part.

I'm probably going to steer clear of it then. It looks dope but I know in the end I will have compatibility issues unless they change how they operate.

And the fact bricks occured from using the 3ds certain ways is just ridiculous. I think its better to stay clear if you want to have a 200% safe way (for future reference.) To have full compatibility of your device.

I mean, it's always possible they come out with something rad, but it seems very unlikely - especially since a $20 R4i Gold (r4ids.cn) flashcart is all you need anyway to install CFW on any 3DS, and it works as a real nice DS cart (Wood kernel) if you restore it to its original firmware.

There's not a lot of extras they could have that would be worth $60 more.

Well I already have a 3ds with CFW but i'm thinking about getting one for the Nintendo Switch. (If they for some reason decided to make one)

I just wanted to see what other people thought though before jumping on the hype band wagon and shooting pistols all over the place lol.

If there was a switch cart, I'd buy it despite the fact that it will inevitably become really outdated.

Actually, I didn't realize this earlier as well. Since Gateway and other flashcard clones like it utilize themselves between emunand and sysnand causing problems with Homebrew, would a card like the Sky3ds or Sky3ds+ be something to better look out for if you want to potentially use Homebrew & CFW in the future?

Just trying to figure out what is safe and isint with flashcards, in the end I know flashcards that use emunand have some risks (like the Gateway card.) But if you just ran the card on a sys nand would it be totally safe to use on the 3ds to have all homebrew/CFW features?

If there was a switch cart, I'd buy it despite the fact that it will inevitably become really outdated.

I would to becuase I would like to backup my games if I lose them, there to expensive to re-buy... In the end though i'd like to have something future proof and safe versus running the risk of trying something that may end up being a horrible mistake.

I just searched this myself. And yes its the safest* way to play game backups without potentially ruining something on the 3ds. The only downside is that its region locked to your 3ds's system. Unlike gateway (if you for whatever reason own out of region games.)

So i'd recommend looking for something that only supports SysNand and doesn't require you to install any files to your system or require formatting your nand for whatever reason.

There's literally no way to brick your 3ds during the install without doing it on purpose. You would have to corrupt the files, then modify the installer for b9s to circumvent safety checks.
