Which card is recommended if you don't have one yet and any recommended suppliers?

R4i gold 3ds RTS. It works as a DS flash cart even on the latest OFW and has RTS support (which the Ak2i doesn't) so once you hack your systems you can restore the backup and use it to play DS games.

Figured I would make an account to answer this exact question. It depends on timetable. Right now we're unsure how long scds2/2p or r4 sdhc would take. Noone on the team has an r4 sdhc and scds2p is a surprisingly complex little machine. Spent more than 8 hours looking at a single logic capture.

Basically, if you have the money and are worried about time, grab the cart. If you don't have money or you're willing to be more patient, by all means.

Did you see the research that @Lilith Valentine recently did on DS flash carts? Specifically this:

But there is more to my research, I was able to find out that almost every DSi cart used this method. They all used the same method of storing full ROMs on a NAND and swapping them out with header update. I was able dump full ROMs from 4 carts and even able to find where they stored the exploit. All of these carts used small update files that very clearly didn't have the ROM data in them. This means that every single DSi flashcart that could be updated will have these ROMs stored on a rewritable chip (be it flash or a NAND.) I feel like that kind of information could help when dealing with these carts.

With Acekard 2i, the card is put into a state where it can be used for ntrboothax, but when stuck into a hacked 3DS that's already booted, acts as a DS flash cart. Thus, you don't really lose the functionality. (I think it won't work anymore on a DSi anymore, but I don't remember.)

I haven't tried the final version with my R4i yet, so I'm not sure.

If you really want to help out a bunch, maybe you can bring this to the attention of the weird bandana kid guy on the supercard forums so maybe we can get this compatible with DStwo. I've seen you a few times on the forum while lurking around there.

From what I've heard on behind the scenes dev chatter, the devs (ours, not supercard) have actually got ntrboothax working on the DStwo but they haven't figured out how to reverse the patched bootloader to a working DS card state. Just saying this to point out there's no reason this shouldn't be portable since the DStwo team obviously has more info on the inner workings of the card, and should be able to pull it off.

The R4i gold 3ds RTS is a great cart on it's own and worth getting if all you have is a DSTwo since the DSTwo is a huge battery hog whenever it is inserted. You can even set your SD card up for dual booting and while RTS saves aren't cross compatible, regular saves are.
Wait, the DSTWO is a battery hog when inserted, even when not in use? I was very taken by the DSTwo back then as until CFW and hax became widespread, it was the most concenient way to play gba games as well as snes (and nds of course) on not just the 3ds but the nds as well. Now that we've got boot9hax though as well as bootstrap for any nds game, I kind of envision a future where I won't need a cart at all, thus I'd like to repurpose my now underutilized DSTwo. What benefits does the R4i Gold 3DS RTS offer over it (outside of now being compatible with ntr boothax of course)?

...but why now?!? With 3 supported flashcards... I'm grateful that you released it, but this will create a business...

Yep. Try putting your 3ds in sleep mode in the system menu (or even a 3ds game) both with the DSTwo inserted and with it removed, you will see that with it inserted, you get about the same battery life in sleep mode as you do when actually playing a game.

Gateway has a release coming up, and we didn't want them to create an actual business/bung up the scene again. Plus, folks were getting antsy and we figured it was best to get it out there.

Before anyone asks, yes, this works even on New 2DS XL.

Hardmods are now obsolete, also, because you can boot GodMode9 on a dead system. I rescued a Canadian friend's 3DS with ntrboothax.
I am just going to state, that of course this works on the new2DSXL. Nintendo used the same bootrom since the 2DSXL is basically a new3DS in a different shell.

I am not sure who that person is, but I will see if I can get in contact with them. I also have a DSTWO of my own.
Right now I am just trying to figure out how to actually set this up.

"Gateway has a release coming up"
Nice joke there. Soon™ will never end. Even GaryOPA on GW's support forum doesn't know shit.

Well hedgeberg has a gbatemp account, so I suggest replying to him, sending him a pm, and/or making an issue on the github page

Ok, thanks for the explanation :)

(So you won't support the gateway blue card, one of the most widespread flash card beyond 3ds users?)
