So late last year...around November/December I think....I installed CFW on my 11.3 New 3DS XL. It involved using something called Soundhax and I could launch homebew launcher through the 3DS sound app. Well, I let my daughter use my 3DS a couple weeks ago while she was visiting a friend and she updated my system to 11.5. So am I pretty much screwed at this point because I don't want to attempt a hardmod? Also, I don't have another 2DS/3DS.

Are you getting a black screen? Did you follow https://3ds.guide? If so you are fine. Just update Luma to 7.0.5 (not the latest) by replacing the arm9loaderhax.bin on the root of your SD card. Your 3DS should boot to the home menu fine after this. https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/releases

What cfw do you have install? If you installed Arm9hax and Bootstrap then you should be fine even with the latest firmware update. They are perm until you uninstall them yourself. If you have one of those then you should be fine.

I must have either followed a different guide but I don't have arm9loaderhax.bin on the root of my SD card. The only files that are on the root are boot.3dsx, otherapp.bin, soundhax-usa-n3ds.m4a and a 3DS and Nintendo 3DS folders. All I remember is that to launch the homebrew app I needed to load something through the Nintendo sound app.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I'm guessing I didn't do the installation correct or didn't complete it.

Ok, it sounds like you never installed CFW unfortunately. You'll need a second already hacked 3DS if you want to install CFW now. Sadly it would have been very easy when you were still on 11.3. Have a look at https://3ds.guide under 11.5 firmware.

The only reason why this is a concern for me now is that I was looking to import the new 2DS LL Dragon Quest edition and I understand that you can use the homebrew launcher to basically make the system region free. So I was told that if I had a N3DS w/CFW on it that I could simply do a system transfer to the 2DS LL and I would have the custom firmware on it and could play NA games on it.

Yep, I remember what happened now and why I didn't finish it. There was something I had to run when I loaded up the homebrew launcher through the Sound app and it kept failing over and over and tried to figure out what I did wrong and reading posts online and I simply gave up on it. Big mistake on my part. =(

Just letting you know any 3ds (assuming the new 2ds xl as well) imported from Japan will be in Japanese language only and there is no option to connect to the NA eshop with a Japanese 3ds since it will take you to the Japanese E shop. So I assume a system transfer would not work with different region 3ds. You may be able to perform a system transfer if you region change it USA through ctrnand transfer (Look at the 3dsguide for more info). But don't connect to the Eshop before changing your region to Usa or you won't be able to connect to the NA eshop. (Important! more info on the 3ds guide)

I've never seen a report of a successful system transfer to or from a region changed system. Not to say it isn't possible of course but just something to keep in mind.

Ok, this is really good information to know! Thanks! I thought by doing the transfer from a NA N3DS w/CFW to a Japanese one it would be like using my NA unit now but if that isn't the case then I'll pass on importing it. I still want to be able to access the NA eshop.
