Can you still hack the Wii U? Planning on buying one, and curious, if it's still possible to hack it, and play backups, and if so I'll go read the threads.

Yeah, the latest firmware (v5.5.1) is exploitable, you can install CFW (well its actually mini CFW) and play Non Legit DLC and EShop only content/games, and you don't even need CFW to install your games to the Wiiu Nand or USB HDD.

Check out one of the guides on here, Kafluke's Noob Guide is in my signature if you want to check out his guide.

When you look for a guide do not under any circumstances and I repeat do not use wiiu guide it's bloody awful and pretty much everyine one this site will tell you not to use it lol.

So then, can I install backups, like if I wanted to install a BOTW game backup?

Round about a year and a half ago. Wiiu guide is bad because it misses out important steps does not explain why you are doing things tells you to do something in the vWii section that is totally not needed and can actually brick the vWii plus a whole lot more that is wrong

Which guide specifically is that, who wrote it, so I can avoid it? And thank you.

Thank you. And would I need to buy a portable hard drive, or would a USB flash drive do?

Edit: already checked that one. It's the one that one dude has in his signature.

USB flash drive would do for most games but is not recommended if you plan on playing Zelda BOTW. Nintendo themselves even said not to use one for BOTW. Flash drives are not made for constant read and writes and BOTW is doing both constantly and this will greatly reduce the life of the flash drive. A hard drive is designed for constant read writes so is a better option.
