Well that sucks.

Can DSiWare games be played on a flashcart? Which system updates block flashcarts?

They cannot. Most updates blocked a few flashcards but they stopped putting out updates years ago and any modern flashcard will work.

If you want dsiware """backups""" then go get some model of 3DS.

Was DSiWare any good? I missed out on DSiWare kind of on purpose: eshops/appstores are all a screw in the long run because you pay money for something which cannot be resold, traded, or even tinkered-with.

Still...I'm a little curious. The Animal Crossing Clock looks cute, but not cute enough for the modding/nand dumping hassle....

I have a N3DS with all the worthwhile DSiWare games legitimately purchased off the eShop. They're sharp and crisp if you hold the Start or Select button on bootup to render them in their native 256x192 resolution, but there are black borders around the screen that isn't filled. You can't play them in full-screen either (game using the entire screen) without everything being a blurry mess.

A DSi XL is the only way to play DS and DSiWare games on a large screen while the pixels stay sharp and crisp.

I'm well aware of the advantages of using native resolution displays and generally aim to preserve image quality without scaling artefacts whenever I emulate or whatever.
I was merely speaking about practicality.

There was Shantae, I guess. And that Cave Story port, until the 3DS version made it redundant.

Only a very small number (because they were programmed in a way they worked from both nand and slot-1), but the only DSi-mode flashcard is expensive, rare, has poor compatibility, and is blocked since 1.4.4 :)

What are these games that can work from both NAND and slot-1?
I don't remember anymore, to be honest - it was one of those facts you find while doing research and of course forget the source after 2 days you stop thinking about it; it was a forum or blog comment that mentioned one supported game by name iirc but haven't been able to locate it in 20 minutes of research, sorry :(

I have those moments too...
Cave Story on DSiWare is inferior to Cave Story+ and arguably Cave Story 3D
Cave Story DSi had the best Time Attack though. Access to all weapons, and you don't have to pick them all again after you die.
