Hm. Do the joy cons only charge if the switch is on? Seems like they doesn't charge if the switch is fully powered off while the switch itself charges fine. :-?
Mine do
So probably yes. I always power off before docking by pressing power off then sliding into the dock quickly. It still charges but doesn't power on.

Yes it must be in sleep mode, which means whatever part charges the joycons does not stay on when the console is off. I thought it would honestly. I know the USB port on my monitor stays active even if the monitor is shut off via power button. So at first it struck me as odd when I found out I couldnt turn the Switch completely off and they still charge.

You can turn it off if you keep the power buton for like 10 to 15 second, then a menu apear and ask if you want to shut down

I was just going to make a post about this.
I believe they are charging wireless like the cellphones and smart watches.
Couldnt find any pin on anything so that the only thing it could be.
Also heard that the joy-con will charge them self while connect to the switch even if the switch is off. Pulling power from the built in battery.

Seems pretty cool and the controller are said to have a very high battery life so all that should be good.
I do wonder when they will be releasing custom controllers. I can see some kirby, zelda, and mario theme ones coming out.
Also pdp has made a grip for the joy-con (looks like the wii u gamepad)

Uhh fancy!! I would like to have that for my Nintendo Switch, whenever I decide to buy it xD

I mean pressing power and using joycons to select "power off", then sliding to the dock before it finished powering down.
if you look closely when the switch is slided on the dock it will turn on you can even see it on the tv so your switch is not powered off, the only way to have a powered off switch on the dock is doing that while the switch is on the dock lol.

Yeah a powered off Switch will power back on into sleep mode if you put it into the dock. You have to turn it off while it's docked to keep it off. Not sure if it actually charges while powered off. I never checked that. :P

Woah that looks cool, I wonder if it would make it more comfortable.
A friend of mine bought those grips and I got to try them. The material definitely feels good, but I could care less for the cheap plastic that's meant to cover the joysticks. It's gross and I'd recommend not using it. The rest of the grip is quite nice and firm in your hand, not likely to slip either. I'd say go for it, if only to give your Switch a bit of extra flair!

Those joycona charge using the small pins on the rail you slide on the switch

Edit: nevermind
