Note; I am not very experienced with cfw and just do exactly as I am told to prevent bricking.
So I followed this guide.

After following this guide, I found that I wanted to play a DS game, (super mario 64 ds to be exact)
and it doesnt boot.

The same thing happens with ds and gba games installed via freeshop.

My question is, should I scrap everything and go for https://3ds.guide
or is there an easier solution?

And if I should, how long would this take me?

You need to install those games to both sysNAND and emuNAND. That is the easier way then 3ds.guide, but you should still follow it as emuNAND is generally not recommened

It will install a9lh, luma3ds, and fbi. You will need to setup freeshop and twloader yourself.

Does not cover how to set up freeShop. Go to http://freeshop.pw/ for that.
