Gearbox shows off Borderlands 3 tech demo

During GDC 2017, Gearbox's CEO, Randy Pitchford got on stage to show off a tech demo for Borderlands 3. The video showcases what potential graphical capabilities exist thanks to Unreal Engine 4, and what Gearbox is trying to accomplish during development of Borderlands 3. He also stressed the fact the footage shown is not necessarily what the final game will look like, just that this is a technological demonstration of what's possible for the company.

The Borderlands Art Style™ isn't really all THAT different from cel shading, imho. I get what they are going for and what techniques they are applying to make it their own, but to me it has never looked like a truly unique-never-been-done-before-style.

And both artistically and technically, looks far worse than Z:BOTW. It just blows that demo out of the water and into space on both counts.

I totally agree. The "thick black outlines" that all of the Borderlands titles, to me, represent an older style of cel-shading. If I remember correctly, I am pretty sure a few developers have commented that thick black outlines were used to distinguish characters on smaller screens or more busy backdrops and the like. But nowadays, cel-shading is evolving into something completely breathtaking, especially in BOTW's case. When the first in-motion trailer for that game came out, I was just so awestruck by the style because it is so damned gorgeous and unique.

let's hope that this time physx doesn't cripple the performance. i like borderlands 2, but the constant drops because of the physx/physics is annoying

Are you accounting for BOTW's low resolution textures that actually do look like they belong in a tech demo, or the draw distance fog that looks like someone dunked the game in a cup of milk?

Gotta hand it to gbatemp community. Need a quick supply of dislike towards a game, head on over and watch the trend fill with shitposts on a game being displeasing to the eyes while disregarding the faults of their fav game. GG 7/10 b8 (not to op)
People have opinions too. Some games aren't just for everyone.

Here's how it works with the Nintendo fanbase:

When discussing a non-Nintendo title: "Whoa, that game looks like sh*t compared to my favourite game!"

When discussing a Nintendo game: "Shut up, graphics who*e, it's about the gameplay, not the graphics!"

Flip-flopping worse than a leaf in a tornado.
