I need a suggested course of action for my stock 5.5.1 Wii U. I would like to play a backup of Bayonetta 2 online (Tag Climax) but am not too sure how best to do this.

So far I have read that I need to install the game to play it online, can this be USB or does it have to be System Memory? Also what is needed on the Wii U first before I can start installing games from my PC to it, is Haxchi a must?

On top of all of this, how safe is it to play backups online?

Ok so first of all it's 100% safe to play backups online but you need to have a CFW (custom firmware) to do this the easiest one to use is called Mocha and the best one is haxchi. Both cam be found by searching the site. For mocha you just need some files on the sd card for haxchi you need to buy a DS game from the eshop and then modify it.

Awesome, thank you for the response. Can I install to USB as well and what happens to the game when the CFW isn't active?

sorry yes you can use USB and you can install the games without cfw they just won't start. It gives a message saying something like this if memory serves me right.

This game was installed using a different nnid please delete the game.
SO cfw needs to be run each time you want to play the non ligit games

Better safe than sorry! All great advise. Update after booting first time then enable DNS blocking after that. Come back here and we'll guide you to next steps

Step 1. After updating your wii u to 5.5.1 go to loadiine.ovh on your pc or phone and read the addresses for the recommended DNS servers.

Then go to your Wii U and change the settings for your wifi connection. Set the primary and secondary DNS server IP addresses to the recommended ones on Loadiine.ovh. (This blocks future updates)

Step 2. Using your PC format an SD card greater than 8gb's for fat32 (we want to have an SD large enough to hold a temporary folder for install of titles to internal memory or USB in a later step)

Step 3. On your Wii U browser go to wiiubru.com/go. Install HB app store and homebrew launcher.

Now before moving on you have to decide how you want to proceed. Do you want to install a CFW (my recommendation) or do you just want to do the old way and run your games from SD?

CFW allows you to install all games that are available from the eshop whether you have a legitimate ticket or not.

CFW:
RedNAND = The safest way to run CFW but also the most cumbersome. This is more a less a sandbox version of your sysNAND running on a hidden partition on your SD. It's a great place to fool around with stuff that you shouldn't be fooling around with anywhere else. It doesn't require valid tickets for any files (Titles, updates, and DLC) If you mess up you only mess up that hidden partition on your SD card. No brick on Wii U. It does have it's limits though and the one glaring one is that you can't play vWii using RedNAND.

Mocha = This is a great custom firmware that patches the sysNAND so that you can install titles without a valid ticket. It works with full titles, updates and DLC as well as homebrew titles like the HBL channel. It does not require you to purchase anything from the eshop to run it but you will have to launch it every time that you boot your Wii U. *Please note* Without HaxChi this method requires you to launch your Wii U browser every time you boot.

HaxChi = This is a very simple method that eliminates the need to use your Wii U browser to fire up the Homebrew Launcher. You basically purchase one of the many compatable DS games from the eshop and then install HaxChi from HBL (You'll have to first launch HBL using the address "loadiine.ovh" from the wii u browser. Do this only after completing step 3 above). After it is installed you will be able to launch HBL by tapping the haxchi icon on the wii u menu. No more need for wii u browser. You can also set up HaxChi so that you boot into a sigpatched sysNAND which is basically the same thing as Mocha. Mocha is just mainly for people who don't want to buy a DS game from the eshop and don't mind a few extra clicks to get there.

CBHC = ColdBootHaxChi. This requires HaxChi to be installed. This is just what it says. It modifies a file on your Wii U to boot HaxChi automatically every time you boot. From there you can setup HaxChi to boot to a sigpatched sysNAND or to auto boot Mocha or redNAND. There is the biggest risk for screw up here. If you don't follow instructions you can brick your wii u. The biggest thing is don't mess with HaxChi after installing CBHC or it won't know where to boot to and it will basically brick.

Game Loading methods:
Loadiine = This is the older method for playing game backups. You launch it from HBL or from the web browser (loadiine.ovh) and you can play game backups that you have on your SD card. Also you can play VC injects (basically emulators for older game systems). Not a lot of people still use this method since the "Brazillian" method for playing games came out.

USB ticket trick method ("Brazillian" Method) = You can use this method with any of the methods above except Loadiine. You just use one of the many programs for downloading eshop titles (I like Wii U USB Helper). You don't need a CFW for this method unless you download a title or DLC that does not have a valid ticket.
