I'd like to preorder, but should I wait in case a bundle deal comes out? Is it better to get a first edition console? Also, is there anywhere you can preorder at the moment? I haven't purchased a console since the original xbox

try amazon or any kind of electronics or game store for preordering.
also, if you want the console to be a hit with many many games in the future, yeah, get it early.
if you want to save 30 bucks in a few months or around christmas, while risking to help kill the switch early on, go for that

Id say look at the games then decide.

Only real advantage to buying sooner is the chance of hacks on lower firmware and/or playing gamers sooner at the cost for potentially waiting for the next one.

Of course, this ignores the portable aspect, if thats important to you.

Problem is that its the chicken and the egg scenario.

Personally, having been there before with the 3DS Id rather wait (remember, that struggled at first).

The reason for my wait would be that I wouldn't want to miss out on an implemented feature in a future release. Such as the original 3DS Vs New Nintendo 3DS. For example, maybe they'll release the Switch with an upgraded feature that you can only get if you purchase the newer Switch console. But I suppose that wouldn't happen, if at all, for quite awhile after its original release.

it's interesting how people think the success or failure of switch is so volatile...

anyway, @MSearles i would wait to see....
pre ordering is a bullshit... ok it gives an idea to the developers about the demand and you are assured to get one.. but come on.. buying a product without barely know about it.... what if you regret getting it? do you like to gamble with money?
wait for a bundle.. wait to "see it" and decide if you like it. do research, try it in the stores and then get it if you really think it's worth...
responsibility guys...
i am gonna give the example of the tons of games in steam that you can pre-order and then find out how shit they are... and you can't do a thing about it because you pre-ordered and played the unfinished alpha\beta then when the final version was released, it come up as unfinished as the beta.... (no mans sky anyone?)

if the console is worth, it will not simply fail... i still remember the days you couldn't "pre.order" and products really had a success!

it will happen.
the 3ds got 5 versions, the playstation 4 so far has IIRC 2 "new models" (slim and pro)
even the wii u IIRC had a 32GB upgrade or something....
"upgraded revisions" isn't something that will disapear.. they are here to stay...

if you want the new model you will have to wait probably 1-2 years but you may as well just wait after is released to undestand if it's good or bad, how does it appeal the real product (all you got so far is some videos on youtube and nintendo telling how it's good)
wait after is released, and then decide, either wait for the new model, wait for a cool bundle\"shiny edition" or buy it right away

Just wait, theres nothing pre-ordering is going to get you. Plus theres only 1 good game at launch it seems (if zelda is good, looks good). Nothing else decent comes out till summer or autumn, just wait for the reviews.

The O3DS came out in 2011. The N3DS came out in 2014. If you put away $10 every month for the next three years you'd have enough for the Switch 2 and a new game. And considering that you'll be able to resell the original Switch fro nearly what you paid you really only have to save a couple bucks a month.

Hard call. The choice is your, but since your asking it would seem like you should wait.
I normally always preorder everything i want if i got the money for it.
So you can preorder it and get it day one and play one of the games that are out now. Then wait for others to come out.

Or simply wait till later and pick up the switch and your have more games out to choice from.
But i do not think nintendo will bundle a game with it for the $299.99 price. They might made something with Mario but it wont be normal price.

i don't really understand the hype and why people pre.order stuff..,
i mean if there are good rewards about it, ok you may think about that... but otherwise i don't see it really productive...
"I'ts to make sure i get it" you want to avoid item shortage, but keep in mind, some companies (if not most of them) create a false scarcity demand... so you need to remember the fact you can't get one in day 1-2-3 is the bullshit that brand is throwing at you (which you should even use that as an hint to hold it even more)

"everyone has it, so why don't i also have it", the fact to "fit" in the society, you don't want to be behind, you want to talk with others about the lastest new thing, you want to play with others while they are still interesting in the game... etc...

i can't think of others but they are all superficial...
or maybe i am just a cheapskate...
i mean, i have money saved for a new computer, my old one is dead. and i was needing an upgrade... i really could use it now, and i am so hyped because finally i will get an upgrade and play newest pc games (and the tons of old games i couldn't play before)...
and i am just holding for it, i could buy it next week, but i have an "hunch" that next month prices will drop, and i will wait and see... (this way not only i have even more saved up money and can get even more stuff, but i get stuff for cheaper..

Bundles and price drops will always come eventually. Just have to ask yourself whether you'll be getting it at some point anyway, and if the early games (BotW, MK8 Deluxe, ARMS, Has-Been Heroes, Snipperclips, Fast RMX) are appealing enough that you'll get plenty of use out of the console. It's the choice between saving $50 and waiting six months or more.

Personally I'd rather just drop the extra $50 right now, but there's never been any other console like Switch, so that makes the hardware uniquely appealing.

There really isn't anything special on the First Edition of the Switch and chances are when Nintendo releases a newer model of the Switch that's probably even better. I mean, for home console gaming the original Switch will always be perfect as it is but in terms of portability, Nintendo is likely going to slim it down and compact it.

The dock on model 2 is possibly not going to even exist or it will, but sold separately so not necessary on v2.

This is a pretty common theory but I seriously doubt it'll happen. 3DS already exists as a portable fallback for Nintendo if Switch somehow sells very poorly. In addition, the dock doesn't have any hardware in it. Meaning that if Nintendo was going to make a "dockless" Switch that costs less because it's portable-only, it would mean R&Ding an entirely new device before they've even recouped the R&D costs of Switch.

Besides, some people already think the 6.2" screen is too small to be playing full-fledged console games on. Details would be a lot harder to see if they cut it by another inch or so. Not to mention developers would have to do extra work to make sure it looks good on both Switch and "Switch mini," which would be counter-intuitive to keeping third-party devs hanging around.
