Can anyone help me install English to a Japanese O3dsxl console. I don't wish to region change as this looses access to the e-shop and certain games like smash brothers. I thought installing a CIA file of the "other settings" option from the system settings would enable me to select the English option under language selection. I can't find the other settings app so to speak in order to install it. I have an English o3dsxl but can't figure out what file I need to dump in order to create a cia of it. I then thought maybe there is a "health and safety" style of dump and inject but have not been able to find one. Please someone help me install English to this unit.

Not possible AFAIK, you have to change the region since the JPN firmware does not have the English language.

In that case if that is definitive does anyone know of a way to do a region change without loosing e-shop and game compatibility?

One thread is sufficient, especially given that you got an answer in the original thread.

To sum things up: No, you can't set a Japanese 3DS to use English without region changing (yes, it was a ridiculous decision. No, I don't know why). Region changing will prevent you from using eShop and running Extended Memory Mode games.

I'm not entirely sure why you need it in English anyhow. You have a second English 3DS, if you ever need to go digging through the settings, you can use both devices simultaneously to navigate your way. Everything is in the same place.

Thank you, I appreciate your reply. though to be fair they were slightly different topics one was much more specific. I thought I might get a different response with a more general approach.

I have been doing some more research on this and found a post from someone claiming they did a system transfer on a region changed console from a legit eur console and had success with no e-shop or game restrictions. Anyone think this will work for me?

So I have to ask because I see this kind of thing all the time... Why do people buy Japanese 3DS' just to turn them English? I can understand if it's a special edition 3DSLL or something, or if they are native and would rather use the Japanese eShop. Other than that, what's the point? If you can read Japanese, play it in Japanese, if you can't why would you want to play languages you don't understand? (It makes more sense to other parts of EUR where their first language isn't English which is foreign to them anyway). Genuinely just curious, since I see threads like this sort of often. What's the big deal with having a JPN DS when the majority of CFW allows RF anyway?

Interesting, you will have to recreate the same steps and hope it works. Do you have a 2nd 3DS that's Japanese?

1 o3dsxl actually (o3dsLL)jap also arm9 i change the region on this to eur and then back again to jap (smash brothers still not working)
And 1 o3ds (not xl) running arm9
not sure i really understand his steps

So here is what I'm going to try over the next few days. Region change my jap console to eur then system transfer my eur console to it.
1) should i follow the region change guide, or downgrade the jap to a eur 9.2 then let Nintendo update it.

2)should i let Nintendo settings do the system transfer or find another method (dsiware)

There is no other method other than Nintendo's. Unless you're counting a manual system transfer which is really complicated.
Cool what are your thoughts on the type of region change. I'm thinking simply downgrading to the new region might be thrown best option

So i region changed back to eur which gave me an English menu. Set the console up and went back in to settings later on to see the region said Japan. Caught up in my desire to do a system transfer i thought oh no that's no good a transfer won't work. So i did a format in order to change the region to Australia. Wish i didn't as that blocked my ability to do the system transfer. I wish i was thinking clear enough to realise i had already achieved what i wanted with the English menu. I did not try but assume with the region set to Japan i could have accessed the e-shop whilst the console was running an English menu. I can't manage to recreate the same situation.

You can either use freeshop moving forward, or fix eshop using the following method:

1) Do this to setup eshop: https://gist.githubusercontent.com/...9156ca0f945a2791e699acfdb32b510/gistfile1.txt

2) Use this to automate the patching: https://github.com/yifanlu/3ds_injector
