So as the title suggest I am an absolute novice when it comes to technical stuff. I somehow managed to put CFW via OOT hax a long time ago and then had to update it based on the new system update. However what I have been really wanting to do is play 3ds roms.

I have been trying to research how to do it and have gotten incredibly confused at how to go about it. I have CFW but putting JKSM on it is as far as my knowledge goes.

For example, on the PSP its literally so simple. Have the firmware installed, drop the ISO in a game folder and play. But it is nowhere as easy for the 3ds.

My question is, what exactly do I need to play 3DS games on my 3DS in a similar fashion of just downloading the game? Do I need to change the custom firmware and then download more programs? Or can I somehow make it work via the same OoT hax I have always been using?

OOTHAX is Homebrew, not CFW. You have to have CFW to install ROMs as CIAs, or get a Gateway/Sky3DS to play ROMs (these are not recommended). If you updated to 11.2 without CFW, you've practically ruined your changes of getting CFW if you don't have a hardmod or another system with an ACTUAL CFW (such as Luma3DS) to do the DSiware downgrade method.

Ahhh, well that proves how much I actually know. Well then thats that, considering my 3DS is indeed 11.2. Rather unfortunate. Does that mean that the only other alternative is a flashcart? I mean I used to have an r4i and it worked for all of like 2-3 weeks before it never worked again no matter what I tried so I am kind of hesitant when it comes to them. And if it does come to that, which do you recommend?

Those flashcarts are for DS ROMs, not 3DS ROMs. Gateway/Sky3DS are your only options.

How would you go about installing the exploit to run Gateway though on 11.2? Is that even possible?

And with the limits Sky3DS and Gateway has, can't really recommend either.

Honestly you'd be best off modding your existing 3DS with another 3DS which has CFW installed on it. I'm under the impression that GBATemp has few trustworthy members known for modding the consoles of other users (for payment, of course), and I would see this as the best course of action. Sky3DS and Gateway would still cost you money, and they would limit you greatly. Why not just pay a tiny weeny bit extra for a superior choice? With A9LH+Luma you can always stay on latest firmware, update through the system settings and not lose the hack. Using it is very easy even if you don't know anything, and even recovering from bricks, if you do something stupid, is easy. Games can be downloaded directly to the 3DS using the freeShop application installed on your 3DS. Couldn't be any easier.

If you also care, it is worth noting that you can't play online with roms on Gateway or Sky3DS. You can however, play online with games installed as CIA's or with games downloaded from freeshop. If you like to play online, then A9LH is even more so what you should want to get.

I have no idea, tbch. I can't recommend either one of them as well. I will agree with what you've said though 100%.

Agreed for Sky3DS, but Gateway sounds out of place here. Because Gateway still needs a downgrade before being usable using the hardmod you mention for example so there is no alternative where he could avoid the hardmod and just get a Gateway, that would not work.
Though I'd agree that it's a waste of money in most cases.

Well I didn't speak of a hardmod, just a mod in general. Wouldn't sys transfer hack be better than a hardmod? Sounds safer to me messing with software than hardware. If he did send it to get hacked to a GBATemp user or elsewhere, do they all do only hardware mods?

You're right though, I included Gateway in the sentence just in case I was wrong but I was under the impression that you needed to hack your console to use GW so he can't use it anyway. Sky3DS in the other hand, he could, but it's just complete and utter garbage compared to A9LH+Luma.

Oh yeah yeah don't worry, I didn't exclude software mods, that was the point of my "for example" (though it was not clear probably). No idea what these gbatemp users offer but yeah, in any case that would still give more features than buying a Sky3DS, we can agree on this :D

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
