Ho'kay, I am getting my 3ds in a few days, it's a new 3ds XL Hyrule edition on firmware 9.0-9.2 and I have been reading the A9LH and Luma installation guide (that pretty everyone on this site is recommending) for the last 3 days, over and over, in preparation.

My concern at the moment is now to NOT update on accident before I even get to install A9LH and Luma. The guide says to create an internet connection and I imagine the minute I do that the 3DS is going to start asking to update, right? I had a normal DS back in the day and bought my GF a 3ds to play pokemon on but I honestly have never even turned one on myself, so... Is there anything I need to know about this seemingly simple first step?

Just on a side note, if anyone wants to discuss this:

Everyone is joining this "master race" of 3ds users but how long, exactly, has A9LH (and Luma) been out and how often do they need to update? How hard is it to update these applications (well I heard Luma has an auto-updater)? And... is there a chance of bricking during updates or normal usage of CFW?

Your console will only download an update if it had a valid connection set, and wireless is turned on, and it is in sleep mode for a good amount of time. So you generally won't have to worry. If a nag does start appearing you can delete it by booting to recovery mode (hold L+R+Up+A before and during starting up) and then cancelling out of it.

A9LH began in about January/February this year. It started off incredibly hard (you had to downgrade to 2.1 to get your OTP, compile your own arm9loaderhax.3dsx using this OTP, and then install it from homebrew). Then someone made a Web compiler which was just amazing (I would love to know how it worked) so you could drag your OTP onto a web page and it would compile your 3dsx file for you and give it to you to download. That's when I did mine for the first time. This was March. Then later in the year the redNAND/unbricking method was invented which was safer and meant you could do N3DS consoles too (which would brick if downgraded directly). Then we got the CTR transfer which was even safer then OTP-less for N3DS then back to CTR transfer, which brings us to today.

Interesting, so its all happened pretty quick then. I ask because I am curious about how fast everything will progress from here, mainly out of concern for how many times or how often I may have to update once I get everything going.

Inject sudokuhax over your DS wifi/dlp app (or some random dsi game if you have one) and make sure you have a backup :P

Also, I am reading that putting a new 3ds into sleep mode during 2.1.0 ctrtransfer will brick it... so is there anything to know about skeep mode? Does it trigger ONLY when you close the lid or can it happen at other times, such as when the device is left unattended for too long?

A9LH itself has hardly changed at all. I haven't updated my installation since March. The original one still works even with all the firmware updates we've had. Luma changes occasionally, but it's easy to update (just replace arm9loaderhax.bin).

So updates ONLY occur during sleep then?

Yes. Unless you go to Settings and choose System Update.

Alright, that removes some of the stress. Once A9LH and Luma are installed (as per the guide's instructions) then there is no chance of updating and losing CFW, or did I read that wrong?

Thanks for the information, btw. It is greatly appreciated.
