Hacking What to do with o3DS/Gateway?

Got A9LH+Luma on n3DS and love it!

Yes, you can. That's how I'm currently set up. I have 3DS with a9lh & Luma3DS on SysNAND 11.2. I've installed the GW launcher and GW chainloader on the SD card and I'm able to start up GW mode by pressing dpad left on power up. I still run GW with EmuNAND (also on 11.2) as that is the default way to run GW.

My current setup is the same as yours. I was thinking of moving to a sysNAND only setup, but won't if it means I can't use Gateway anymore.

I don't think EmuNAND is essential, but I don't currently have my GW at hand to test. I think the launcher expects an EmuNAND by default, but you can force it to use SysNAND by pressing buttons whilst launching Gateway Mode. From the GW manual:

While EmuNAND setup is not required, it is STRONGLY recommended. A bad write while in your SysNAND could result in a non-functioning 3DS unit

Place the cursor over “BOOT GATEWAY MODE” and Hold B then Press A, then Press X by itself to boot to SysNAND Gateway Mode. Caution! Do not use SysNAND Gateway Mode except to perform this operation as anything done to the New 3DS in this mode will apply directly to the system itself and could cause damage!

but you want Luma sysNAND for DSiWare and GBA?

Yes. But Luma3DS also allows you to install .cia games directly onto the console, so you don't need to carry cartridges around. Not so critical if you've got a GW already. You also don't need to worry about private headers with .cia installed games.

You can (I am sysNAND-only with Luma and Gateway) but it's safer to use emuNAND, so you don't brick if you accidentally update in Gateway mode. And you don't have the annoying message at start-up.

Yep a brick from updating in Gateway mode is a real brick (overwriting the place where a9lh is installed)

Yep - I hold down on boot to get to Gateway mode.

Yes, but you'll be stuck on 9.2 (or whatever firmware Gateway time machine installs from) and have no access to payloads to recover your system, so it's really the worst of all worlds. No advantage. Better to stay on menuhax Gateway.

On Gateway 4.2 (I think) when you boot into sysNAND you have to confirm with some button combination that you truly want to boot into sysNAND.

Just install A9LH with luma and the whole shabang. Then what you do is, you sideload GW. What I have is GW set to boot with down on the Dpad. The thing is, if you do this you still need a emunand, because GW complains about using sysnand and it has no protection as mentioned. You should be able to boot an emunand through A9LH 11.2 sysnand, but it's kind of a pain. Honestly I'd give straight CFW a shot. I stopped using my GW and got a bigger SD card, however the functionality is present for me if needed.

I'm to the point where I just need to sideload Gateway but am unsure what I need. Probably just some sort of Gateway payload for Luma - I'm guessing. emuNAND is still intact

You most definitely cannot boot emuNAND from a sysNAND higher than 9.2 (a9lh or otherwise).

Luma payload chaining ("sideloading") is the only way.

But I believe you can still boot emuNAND on a9lh with an updated sysNAND (you tick the options in Luma config that relate to emuNAND rather than sysNAND).
