Grab an exploitable DSiWare game, set it up for downgrading and do a System Transfer of your EmuNAND to the new console.
Not only will you perform a proper system transfer, you'll have a hax set up and ready for downgrading to 9.2 and setting up further stuff.

Check out the plailect guide, particularly how to downgrade with DSiWare.

Yes, after you downgrade, you would install A9LH, ideally.
A system transfer is necessary to move the exploited DSiWare save over; it transferring your actual content would be a bonus.

Neat, so what DSI game do I install on my old 3ds?

If you have Four Swords Anniversary, that would work.
Otherwise, you'd need to get a copy of Legends of Exidia.

It's worth noting that the DSiWare game used needs to be legitimate.
Additionally, it would be a safe idea to back up any saves of CIA games you've installed.

Anything on the Gateway card itself should be fine, but illegitimate digital content may require reinstallation in the end, and that may result in loss of saves.
Check out the other threads on here for more info on this sort of thing (and Plailect's guide, of course)

I see, is there no other way of exploiting the new 3ds? I feel like buying a dsi game just to use as an entry point is a bit of a waste

The only ways in on 11.0+ (guaranteed on most new stuff, especially the Black Friday) are hardmod or DSiWare.
If it turns out you have 10.7 somehow, then check Plailect's guide for how to downgrade from there.
Otherwise, that's all there is.

So let me get this 100% straight, Im going to go and buy the DSI game via old 3ds, real eshop. Then I some how edit the save file with a tutorial I guess.. and transfer the save file/game to the new 3ds with the 3ds system transfer tool?

Yes; Plailect's guide ( https://3ds.guide/ ) has info on how to do this.
DSiWare is able to downgrade NATIVE_FIRM but you need to get a hacked save into it; in this case from your already-hacked system plus transfer.

You install it on wherever you're transferring from.
If you're going to transfer your EmuNAND to the new system, then that's what you want to do, yes.

Shoot one last thing, so when backing up my gateway/.cia saves im using JKSM save manager but is there an easier way to move it all at once? currently the save manager is very tedious for moving multiple saves

Nah that's pretty much you're only option, yeah it sucks but better than losing all your saves. When you've transferred to your new console you'll be able to install all your gateway saved games as cia's and you won't even need your gateway, unless of course you wanna use it to play DS games (which you probably do)

Ya well, im stuck on step 5. ( https://3ds.guide/dsiware-downgrade )

Holding start on boot does nothing, could it be because Im using gateway/menuhax?

You need to have arm9loaderhax installed to be able to boot into Hourglass9 by holding start on boot.
Well jeez, the whole point of me opening this thread was so that I could do it with gateway........ ugh

Ay, you said this would work with my old gateway setup, the tutorial says I need hourglass... ):X

Eh?
The only reference to hourglass9 I see is to backup and restore the NAND, as it assumes you use A9LH SysNAND and want it back once you're done.
If you're using an EmuNAND, just use EmuNANDTool (or whatever modern equivalent) if you want to have a copy to restore back.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
