Hacking Software update....

I haven't used my 3DS in about 3 months and I know they have released an update....I have A9LH on my system....I am assuming its safe to update to latest version? Just checking

So long as your CFW supports FIRM0/1 protection (which is all the active one,) you are safe to update.
Although, you really should update your CFW before updating your system. It's not really a security risk, just worth doing.

Yes but first update Luma to latest build (6.5)
Maybe update A9LH if you want to boot without an SD card in case it gets corrupted or got missing, but that is your call
Then do the system update since you have A9LH+the latest Luma :-)

Sadly, I don't even know what version of A9LH I have...I installed it waaay back when it first came out....I found the guide to update it but I don't even remember if I used Luma or not.....I guess I can put my card in my laptop and find out....according to the guide it should work regardless of what version of A9LH I have anyway...

okay, i'm following the steps over at https://plailect.github.io/Guide/updating-a9lh and it gets to the point where it tells me to press Down on D-Pad and Press Select....but I get "Error: payload_state1.bin doesn't exist or exceeds max size" error....it was in the release folder that I downloaded but no clue where to put it

I think you didn't read the guide carefully:

1. Copy the contents of the arm9loaderhax zip to a9lh folder on your SD card

did you did this step or did you put them to the root of your SD card?
Did you check from your files that you are running Luma?

Nice now you have the latest a9lh!
Now continue with the guide until section II
Then,when you insert the SD card back in your system and reboot with holding select, does it show you the Luma menu or not?
If yes then update to the Luma latest build and continue
Edit:you update Luma by downloading the latest release and extracting from the Luma3DSv6.5.7z the arm9loaderhax.bin to the root of your SD card

on Section 3, it says to select arm9loaderhax.bin and copy it to CRTNAND.....when I select Destination on FBI, it just says NAND, not CTRNAND....is this normal?

Are you using the latest FBI release ?
It should have SD ,CTR NAND, TWL NAND etc

my FBI is so old, it doesn't have that! Yea, It was back when 10.x was newest version LOL

Go to the latest release of FBI download the .cia move it to your SD card and install it from your FBI
Edit:IF that doesn't work you can inject it to H&S app by following this from Plailect's Guide:
Section V - Injecting FBI

1. Open Hourglass9 from arm9loaderhax by holding (Start) on boot
2. Go to “SysNAND Backup/Restore”, then select the “Health&Safety Dump” option to dump Health & Safety to hs.app (you can use Up and Down / Left and Right to change the name)
3. Press (B), then select the “Health&Safety Inject” option
4. Select the FBI injectable .app for your region
5. Press (A) and confirm to inject
6. Press (Start) to reboot
7. If you still launch to the stock Health & Safety app and have downgraded with Gateway in the past, follow this troubleshooting guide

Now If you want and SDless Luma system, just copy-paste the arm9loaderhax.bin from the latest luma.7z you downloaded and extracted to the root of your SD card to CTR NAND :-)
I think you are ready to update your system to the latest version!

Got the arm9loaderhax.bin in CTR NAND .....when you are juggling between Vita hacking, Wii U hacking and 3DS hacking...it can get confusing....(now just waiting on PS4 hacks )
