Hi,

So last week I installed A9LH on my second 3DS that still was on 4.5 with Gateway (Didn't do it before because I let my sister use it, and she isn't tech savy so she wouldn't manage to install A9LH herself probably).
However, when I did, I noticed the guide was extreamly different than what it was a bunch of months ago when I did my first 3DS A9LH installation. (at that point I think A9LH was still quite new and a lot of people were still using RXTools)

As of now, both 3DS are on latest 11.2 version with Luma 6.5. However, when I power on the one I did months ago, I see the screen powering on for a very short time, then turn back off, and on again when the home menu loads. The one I did recently doesn't do that. I think the A9LH on the first one is an old version that does screen-init and the one I did recently has the current version that doesn't do that.

But other than that (and diffrent version of luma updater on the older install, but that's just as simple as installing the new .CIA) both 3DS seam to act the same.

So other than no screen-init, is there any differance in the newer version that makes it worth updating ? I don't plan on installing SDLess A9LH, just the one used in the actual version of the guide.
The old guide made us backup less files that the new one, but I think the only file that matters for A9LH update on O3DS's is OTP.bin and I still have that along with the original nand backup I made back then, so the update process souldn't be a problem, it's just that I don't realy want to do it if it isn't usefull.
Is there a risk that in the future new versions of luma will stop working with old versions of A9LH ?

Toughts ?

I haven't updated my a9lh since I installed it ; and I've been doing just fine with it.
You'll need to update your CFW from time to time though.

(I update my CFW once a week , if a stable is released)

There are other benefits too, such as being able to have Luma's arm9loaderhax.bin directly in your CTRNAND, allowing you to keep your 3DS usable even if your SD slot breaks.

Or in the more likely event that your SD card corrupts.

Works too, but I didn't count that one since your 3DS would only be unusable until you replace the card, unlike the case where your SD slot is broken, case where you'd better either have a hardmod or have payloads in your CTRNAND, or your 3DS is useless.

Check the changelog of newer versions and decide for yourself if you want to update or not. That said, I haven't updated A9LH since my first install, though the reason for this is because I'm a lazy don't-fix-what's-not-broken person.

Actualy I don't plan on going SDLess because there is little informations on it and how it works, the A9LH installation guide doesn't even mentions it... I dont realy want to go the yolo route with no or very little informations and end up bricking something that works now.
I don't even know where you find SDLess unless it's that (http://gbatemp.net/threads/shadownand.431718/) but it says "Shadow nand is not : Luma 3DS" so idk)

Nope, the SDless stuff I'm talking about is just putting Luma's arm9loaderhax.bin file at the root of your CTRNAND using GodMode9 for example. I just tried updated my a9lh to try it, it works. I really only did it for the safety measure I mentioned earlier though, because I still use an emuNAND so I really don't have a reason to boot without an SD card.

Oh wait, looks like the "Update A9LH" page has been updated... Yesterday
With what it says I think it actualy now is SDLess A9LH that is on it. Well I'll try it then (I may even need to update the install I did a week ago as well, I'm sure it isn't SDLess)

I updated all my a9lh installations (keep in mind that I did mine when it was using the "make and format an emunand and then hope it copies over correctly) because I wanted the newer larger payloads of Hourglass9.

I will probably update to the sdless version soon anyhow. (After I fix my patched twl_firm)

3DS is the first system that has f***ed me over everytime i went the yolo route. Even if every step was supposed to work and was completely thinked through.

So, from my own experience, don't go yolo with this one.

Ok so I folowed the update guide and it worked perfectly. Now I can boot luma without SD card. However it doesn't talk about adding payloads. Can you add payloads to SDLess luma like you do it on the SD card ? There is no luma folder in CTR Nand even after booting SDLess luma.
Also appears the second 3DS was already SDLess compatible, wierd that the guide hadn't the step of copying the arm9loaderhax.bin to CTR Nand, I just did that and it worked on it without needing to update the A9LH installed a week ago.

PS / I guess to update SDLess luma you just copy a new version of arm9loaderhax.bin on CTR Nand and that's it, right ?

EDIT : I fond a luma folder in RW on CTR Nand. If you add the payloads there, does it work ?

That's because the SD-Less A9LH fork has been around for 18 days. Luma3DS stable release (6.5) wasn't even out until about 22 hours ago. So yeah, that's why it didn't make you do that a week ago.

That's a point, I checked and now that step is on the guide so it has definitly been updated since a week ago.
Well that actually gave me a valid reason to update A9LH on the old install, and now they are both at the exact same state which is probably a good thing if some new stuff comes in the future.
Thanks all for your answers by the way.

probably a very stupid question, if i'm already on v2 a9lh (the first v2 build) i'm gonna have to update with to the latest before coping the arm9loaderhax.bin to the nand right?
