Is the name supposed to be a play on 大変? Trying to figure out what the joke is. :)

It's either a direct reference to the word 大変革 (Daihenkaku) meaning large revolution, large change etc or a portmanteau of 大変(Taihen) and 変革(Henkaku). Maybe even both.

I assumed 大変革 too, but it's obviously always read as 'dai' in that context, never 'tai'.

Back on the PSP there were various Homebrew ENablers which gained the title HEN (chickHEN being one of the more notable). I guess this is a follow on from that.
Similarly there was a little language image thing a while back that did note that hentai and taihen were what they were (similar idea to http://i.stack.imgur.com/0wtlv.jpg and http://i.imgur.com/QFm6SCE.png and similar things really) and offered a basic description. To that end even if the creator/namer is not a Japanese speaker it might not be an obscure pun as much as one of the few things someone might know of the language. I don't know anything about the author but that would be my logic if operating under the assumption they are not.

The original HENkaku name was clever for the reasons you've stated - obviously there were the HEN developments on the PSP so using this and developing the name 変革 (henkaku - change, transformation) was a nice little pun.

It's fair to assume that the basis for TaiHEN (the new CFW framework) is 大変 (taihen - big problem, serious, grave) given that taihen is a VERY common word in Japanese and is another clever pun.

The language nerd in me rejects 'Taihenkaku' however because this is not a word and no Japanese person would understand the meaning. :) I instinctively want to correct it to 'Daihenkaku' (大変革) which actually is a word and implies a bigger or more extreme 'henkaku'. :)

About Tai Hen or Hen Tai...

AND this cannot be stated enough. This is a developer framework for the start of a CFW, not an end-user ready patch. Can't believe folk have already installed it & then started complaining already....

Because fools will be fools and blame others for their foolish behavior.

Well I updated the website to reflect the suggested pronunciation. Btw, this is how English speakers feel about insane Japanese game product names like "new 3ds" or kingdom hearts II.8.
