My friend wants me to help him build his first gaming pc.
He told me the parts he picked and his budget. I was wondering if these parts were ago for him and if you guys and think of better parts or see any flaws.
900$-1000$ (only wants Intel for cpu and Nvidia for gpu)

What's the benefits of switching to 80+ Gold PSU
And is the 1060 really worth the upgrade if from a 960 if he had the money?

I assure you, this is the best he can get.
However I'm not sure the the Cougar Spike can support the Cryorig H7
I'd also recommend adding 2 more case fans for better airflow in the case.

80+ standards refer to a more better, consistent power delivery.
Yes, the GTX1060 is an absolute monster. It outperforms a GTX970 easily, runs cooler and is waay more power efficient.
However the one thing I hate about the GTX1060 is that it can't SLI, hence the GTX1070. The 1070 performs on par with the GTX980ti, if not better. Also can SLI if your friend runs into some more money to upgrade to 4K

That's alright. But for 1000 usd he can definitely get the GTX1070 with an unlocked i5 instead of the GTX1060

Well the thing is he really is on a 800 dollar budget but I said I would put in some extra just incase. If the 1070 is really worth it I might just put in for him.

Almost as good as the first build I linked. When he wants more performance, he can BCLK OC the 6400 to somewhat close the gap to the 6600K, but will require a better cooler than what is supplied with the 6400. (The 6600K isn't supplied with a cooler, the 6400 is, just incase you were wondering).
Also, he can also buy more RAM later, if he needs.

I wouldn't go 1070 if he's on a strict budget. Just get something like the EVGA 1060 FTW and be happy with it lol

SLI is a bit hit or miss anyway, I'd always just recommend getting the best single graphics card you can

Generally gaming laptops will be anywhere from $800-2000 anyway. At the lower end you will probably find the likes of core i5 and a GTX x40M for modest gaming, but jumping to core i7 and GTX x60M (the lowest I consider for modern games) or above adds a few more hundred to the price.

But this is hijacking a thread about a gaming desktop setup.

I wouldn't recommend getting the last gen GTX9XX laptops now, it's best to invest in a GTX10XX laptop. With the GTX 1050 and 1050 ti now released, we should see sub 1000 usd laptops hit the market too.

It wouldn't fit into the $800 budget, though, and it's usually not a bad thing to save money, especially since the friend doesn't sound like someone who would be going to far above 1080p

If the friend doesn't plan to go over 1080p, the GTX1060 works fine.

That motherboard has a m.2 slot. Without a doubt, try your absolute best to get a proper m.2 drive for your OS rather than a SATA SSD. I know it's about 180 bucks for a samsung 950 pro 256GB, but it will be guaranteed to make your friend think you're a frikin' wizard. There are cheaper options, but that's the speediest.

I have an 850 EVO m.2 and even though it's not taking full advantage of my motherboards 10Gb/s rating for the m.2 slot you won't see me complaining

Most of the parts he picked said they're compatible although he didn't pick a cheap SSD it should be sufficient enough.

if your friend wants a fancy case, get the thermaltake core p3 case. its pretty good and requires no fans except the cpu fan since its open air and costs as low as $119.

I'd say get the Corsair Carbide SPEC-02, for the price it'll blow anyone away

He already has mini tower bought. If anything I might look into these suggestions when I build my pc.

Also corsair seems pretty reliable for their fans and at a decent price a case wouldn't be bad from them I'd guess.
