I have A9LH now, but I don't see anything different from MenuHax (except the themes, boot rate, unbricking). Is that it?
You have ARM9 code execution outside of the 3DS' main firmware. Because of that, you can now update your sysNAND to 11.0 and retain an ARM9 exploit, assuming you're using Luma3DS.
Luma3DS puts write protection on FIRM, where A9LH gets installed. To prevent a brick, it doesn't allow the user to disable this.

If you play Virtual Console games or DSiWare, you'll see benefits in A9LH, since you'll only need to boot to sysNAND where your VC titles/DSiWare are already installed. People who play VC or DSiWare will know that to load those titles, you'd need to install them to both sysNAND and emuNAND if the two NANDs were unlinked.
emuNAND basically becomes redundant for casual users since the sysNAND is reliably protected by A9LH and its homebrew.

The benefits of A9LH comes from the applications built for it. I've described some examples:
Hourglass9 lets you dump/restore the NAND and dump 3DS/NDS carts in one package, GodMode9 lets you have full access to the 3DS NAND via a file manager, Decrypt9 lets you do some additional decryption & encryption on your console and 3DSafe can create a PIN-code lock for your 3DS. Most cases are for custom firmware, but A9LH gives you access to a lot more of your 3DS due to the nature of ARM9 exploits.

I've had a gateway from when it was first released and couldn't be happier. I use CIA files and have 3 consoles for my family that all use the single gateway card. I have no desire to change - every day in here there are posts from people who have bricked trying to install other cfw.

I'm running with arm9lh and I will tell you why you must use it, of course, in my limted opinion:

1) Watchable advantages are plain in 100% bootrate, SysNAND usage, no EmuNAND required.
2) It is an STANDARD, it means its developing will continue and unlike Menuhax, RxTools (talking about hax and CFW) will be the basis for further development
3) It's heavily supported by developers, it means less time to wait and more efficient tasks (error reports, bug fixes, etc)
4) A vast and UNIFIED database, we have a very updated and awesome guide to follow and you really need to be very very reckles or unaware to brick with it.
5) Menuhax are more likely to be patched
6) Ar,9lh actually incentivates user to understand the SysNAND process rather than incentivate the fear to use it.

im lazier than a slakoth, dont want to risk a brick break. cus that would be super effective against me. especially cus I hold the zelda LBW 3ds and dont want to metaphorically "fling" it out the window in case I mess something up. I'd need a better safe guard to install on my main starter.

any of these pokepuns do it for ya?

So looks like im stuck waiting for a new method.

I have gateway, fully updated emunand everything works 1 gb means 3% extra space on my current SD (yay), why should I bother? I save way more time from not having to install cias when I want to swap games thanks to gateway than by whichever many seconds a day this hack pretends to save.

Ok so my current setup is with luma and emunand, but I am wondering a few things about switching to A9LH:
1. All my games and saves are in emunand, so if I have to reinstall everything in sysnand, will things like saves be deleted?
2. I want to keep my gold mii that I have in sysnand. I tried to get it on emunand and it did not work.
I can't just use one nand or the other, so how would I go about doing this?
(or would something like this need its own thread?)

I was using menuhax/luma for the past year and all my games saves and cias are on emunand as well, i just did the otpless method to get A9LH in literally 2 minutes. Downloaded newest Luma which supports OTP-less and it walks you thru setup, emunand boot auto first so when you power on 3ds all your games show up and game saves are still intact! As for other questions maybe someone else will help you out there..

I have an old3ds, not a new3ds. I need A9LH to keep my sysnand with my gold mii but at the same time to make all my emunand saves accessible, and have all this on ONE NAND.

I might just start a thread.

I'm really excited, I sent my New 3DS XL in to get a hardmod a couple days ago, so I can install A9LH when I get it back!
I've been reading about a few of the advantages of CFW vs. non-CFW-only homebrew, and I'm especially looking forward to being able to easily dump 9.6-crypto titles like the new Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice game. I'll also finally be able to randomize the starters for Pokemon Alpha Sapphire, since you need an RO bypass to play the game after modifying the starters.

Other than that, though, I'm not completely sure what more a CFW installation allows me to do, compared to non-CFW homebrew. Could anyone explain a bit more why having CFW is so important?

What can I do with Custom Firmware?
  • Play all game cards and eShop games, regardless of region
  • Customize your HOME Menu with user-created themes and badges
  • Use "ROM hacks" for games that you own
  • Take gameplay and application screenshots
  • Backup, edit, and restore saves for many games
  • Play games for older systems with various emulators, using RetroArch or other standalone emulators. (Works best with a New Nintendo 3DS)
  • Install homebrew titles to your system, and have them appear on your HOME Menu
  • Dump your game cards to a format you can install, and play them without needing the card
  • New 3DS only: stream live gameplay to your PC wirelessly with NTR CFW
  • Run many old Nintendo DS flash carts that were blocked long ago or never worked on Nintendo 3DS
  • Safely update to the latest system version without fear of losing access to homebrew
