I'm planning to buy a DS lite or even a DSi. Mine's been broken since 2011, but I wanted to play some games again (Pokemon Dp soundtracks on youtube got me on some nostalgic shit). I've done some research and I saw some newer stuff like R4i Gold Pro or SuperCard, but I don't have a 2/3DS so I'd guess that buying them for my DS lite would be paying extra $$. My friend suggests me a CycloDS iEvolution but idk...

Tldr; I will have a DS lite and I don't think its worth getting a 3DS compatible cart for a DS lite

So which one would be the most efficient just enough for my DS?

I'm looking for:
  • Fast loading/booting
  • Easy to change cheats/settings
  • Efficient saving (one friend always complain about his game saves corrupting)
  • Compatibility with all or most games
  • Long lasting (My friends told me recently that his R4i(old black one) keeps freezing and giving out errors randomly)

Go with an R4i-SDHC 3DS RTS. It's a pretty good cart. Supports applying cheats before launching a game, and has real time save. I've had one for a long time, and I'm pretty happy. If you want GBA emulation though, you could go for the SuperCard DSTwo, but that's really expensive. Personally, for a DSi, I'd grab an R4i-SDHC 3DS RTS and an EZ-Flash IV (or any of its variations, I suppose) for GBA. Sure, buying both will be more expensive than buying just the DSTwo, but it'll be much better - the DSTwo draws too much power, at ALL times, due to its built-in CPU.

Well, if you only want NDS gaming (and maybe GBC emulation), you can go with pretty much any DS mode flashcart (especially on the DSlite, as it older flashcarts will still work there). Hell, you could go for the original R4, but that doesn't work with SDHC cards, so you'd be limited to 2GB. I also own an R4 Ultra SDHC, which is what I'd call a crappy clone, but works just fine. However, I still recommend the R4i-SDHC 3DS RTS.

If you also want to do a transfer pokemon from GBA, I suggest 3 in 1 Expansion Pack for EZ-Flash V for Slot-2.
Although I'm not sure that newer DS flashcard still support it or not. DSTT is the only card I can confirm that it support 3 in 1 Expansion Pack.
Hum, indeed, that can be used.

I can confirm the R4 Ultra SDHC works with the EZ V 3i1. Also, It might be a good idea to get this instead of the EZIV, you can write the games from the R4 to the EZV, and it'll run them.

Are there any good carts where 3ds isn't supported? because I feel like if it's compatible with a 3ds then it'd prolly cost more since I'm just gonna have my DS lite.
I mean, if the 3ds compatible carts are still worth getting just for my DS lite, I'd chip in.
Oh, and I heard the R4i series have really short life.. most of my friends switched to DSTT because of that reason and they said DSTT is slower, but it lasts way more longer.
Their R4i's usually end up becoming a brick over time for some reason. Either they wouldn't boot anymore or they would freeze very frequently.

oh, and I don't know a lot about the GBA with DS thing..
I don't know how the GBA flash carts work because I've started playing nintendo games on the DS.
I remember that in new pokemon games, you could transfer pokemon from your GBA cartridge to your DS chip straight up, but you wouldn't be able to do that if you got a DSTWO correct?
I would like to play some GBA games also

If the 3DS has CFW and correct setting, almost all flashcard can be use on them, included DSTT which normally blocked.

I can't answer this question since I'm also DSTT user. Sorry.

Yes, which the correct flashcard (Only 3 in 1 Expansion Pack for EZ-Flash V), you can tranfer pokemon from GBA rom to NDS gen IV rom.

I am just going to come in and crush everyone
M3 is dead and long dead
The R4i-SDHC 3DS RTS is a crap clone
The DSTT isn't very good
The R4 is limited to non-SDHC microSD cards
The DSTwo is horrible on battery life.

If you want the best cart is for the best price, the R4i Gold (r4ids.cn)
It officially supports Wood R4, which means it has all the official Wood R4 features. Including, but not limited to, RTS, cheats, multi-saves, the ability to use .sav/.nds.sav, very easy to customize, doesn't drain your battery life, and of course fast loading times.
http://www.nds-card.com/ProShow.asp?ProID=149
It's basically the only cart is close enough to being called an unofficial r4 upgrade.

I'm agree with you that DSTT is outdated and shouldn't be suggest anymore.
But, if the person wants to do pokemon transfer from GBA roms > DS GenIV on DSL, he/she needs 3in1.
And I can only confirm it's working with DSTT plus R4i-SDHC 3DS RTS that you calling "crap", which @gnmmarechal confirm.

$80-100 Cyclo iEvolution. Out of production, almost impossible to find, no advantages on a lite or 3DS. If you're concerned about the price of other flashcarts, you won't be looking at this. I cannot recommend this one.

$40 Get the DS2 for the SNES emulation. Also, the + and non-plus are the same price, so get the +. It's supposed to perform a little better. Regarding battery life, some people say the CPU can't be turned off, so it sucks a lot of power. Others say it turns off if you play an *nds file, and the DS2 has the second best battery life in these cases (better than real cartridges even). Mine is the second case. I think the first is people who don't know what they're talking about.

$20 Acekard 2i is supposedly best battery life, but doesn't have the features of the ds2 or r4i gold 3ds. And is out of production

$15 If you don't want SNES emulation, and don't care about better battery life, get the r4i Gold 3DS. It natively supports GBA games via the 3in1 (you don't need a loader), and as it's only $10-15 (depending on country), you're not really spending any more than an inferior card. Battery life is awful, about 2 hours on my DS Lite, compared to 5-10 on the DS2.

PS: Whichever you get, get the 3in1 to go with it. Using GBA EXP Loader, all flashcarts are compatible.

PSS: Whether it fits in your DS is hit-and-miss. I have the DS2 and r4i Gold. Both fit in my Lite and the New 3DS XL when I had it. My old 3DS XL can only take the r4i (DS2 physically doesn't fit in the slot). My New 3DS (non-XL) can only take the DS2 (the r4i doesn't physically fit).

PSSS: Don't buy the r4i SDHC series. They have expiration dates to make you buy a new card every year, with no extra features to give them an advantage. The expiration date can be fixed by changing your DS's clock to the right year, but still. Don't give them your money.

Thanks, this is an answer I was looking for.
Next time when people ask for DSL flashcard, I will suggest R4i Gold, the same when I'm suggesting 3DS users.

Note that if you use bagplug with the DS2, or Moonshell with any of them, you can set GBA games to launch automatically without needing to manually use the loader. It's a little extra configuration up front though.

My Old FAT NDS already sitting as paperweight after it's screen turn blue.
I only keeping it for using when I need to do Pokemon Transfer From Gen IV to Gen V.
(Most of my Gen III Pokemon already move to my legit Platinum cartridge).
And after I got my N3DS, it's no longer use. But, thanks anyway.
