I've just got an Android tablet on Freecycle. It's on Android 4.0 which I know isn't the latest, but when I try to update it from the settings I'm told it's up to date. I've been reading about custom OS images but I have no idea which one to use or which ones are even compatible. Can anyone provide some guidance? It's a 'CNM Touchpad 7' if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance!

It's not like you can update unless the manufacturer provides an official update method or you can get one somehow.
According to a quick Google search (I mean jeez you could've done it yourself you know?) there's no official update OR custom updated ROM for it. So basically, you're screwed unless you're planning on dumping it's contents and manually creating it yourself (which is tedious).

That's the big issue with Android: fragmentation and no official update method - every manufacturer makes up it's own method with it's server instead of providing a minimal custom working ROM and having it download updates from Google's servers, which would be a better method all around.

Did I not state that I've already been reading about this but didn't know which ROMs are compatible?

Ok thanks.

@Wolfvak basically explained it

Yeah I've never used android before. I have no idea if this device or the version of android on it are representative of android in general, but it's absolutely awful. Everything is sluggish, the App Store was missing after a factory reset and had to be installed manually, the store crashes with an error that the google play service 'stopped' and it refuses to install an update to this service, even the keyboard is shit - tapping a field brings up an interface which covers the whole screen so you can't see what you're typing into. Even the bloody web browser doesn't work properly, randomly crashing back to the home screen all the time. Alll this meant it took an hour to get the App Store to even load, only to find that nothing would install. The only pleasant thing about this experience was googling possible fixes on my iPad...

Get a different tablet. I'm sure that one is cheap trash. Save up for a more expensive one

I'm sure you're right. It runs like dogshit and is certainly not giving me a good impression of android devices. I don't need to save up and get a better one - I'm perfectly happy with my iOS devices. I'll probably bin this android tablet as it doesn't seem useful for anything.

Tablets that aren't mainstream are often lacking of updates and contain terrible hardware. The more popular the tablet is, the higher the chance of ROMS existing for it. I can't find much info online regarding the tablet, and honestly, it seems awful. I have a similar tablet lying around somewhere. You're better off buying a better tablet.
